how would you go about finding this color

i figured i could get away with painting the engine block green but it looks like a xmas tree with the head on

You can try this, it's called German Machine Green.

Get to an auto paint supply they can find the correct paint recipe to make that engines correct color.

Buick Engine Green looks pretty close.

Try a bottle of Model Master Acryl Hellgrun, which is not too far off from that. You might need to add a drop or two of black to make it more exact.

Lo-Lo, that's green? looks more like a grey to me. Nice color though.

this is the Hellgrun over a Metalizer color,

some black added may help "grey it out" a bit to look more like what's on that 1:1 engine.
