The Creative Explorer Posted January 24, 2012 Author Posted January 24, 2012 Thanks guys! @John; Yours makes me almost quit mine, dang it looks good. But of a complete different level Another small update, there is not so much happening, I haven't lost the motivation, but I did lost speed and I keep waiting on stuff. I am now waiting on special paint for the wooden floors. We'll start with the floor, the side and bottom were removed, to give me the possibility for weathering it just like the uniforms. I have been given it a lot of thought, but I decided to make a diorama, never done that before really and just fiddled a bit. I also decided to call this project: Der Fliegender Fuchs, which mean the Flying Fox, after Edwin Rommels nick: Desert Fox. The idea is to make a car/ww2 equivalent of the Flying Dutchman, where Rommel haunts the desert and appears from underneath it. I started to fiddle with toothpicks first, but way to unstable Then I used a brass rod and it worked perfect. I got a piece of waste-laminate and glued watered newspaper to it, on top I put some tissues and wetted them with a mix of white-glue and water.
The Creative Explorer Posted January 24, 2012 Author Posted January 24, 2012 (edited) This was the result: When everything dried, I started with adding sand, I used 'shell-sand' and it took me an hour to cover everything with white glue and sand. Edited January 24, 2012 by The Creative Explorer
The Creative Explorer Posted January 24, 2012 Author Posted January 24, 2012 After an hour or so of drying, I took it to the paintbooth and sprayed it beige, the darkbrown/black shows the hole where Rommels shoots from into the air. I also changed the configuration a little bit, the car was too much too the back, it looked like it was sitting on the sandbank rather than come out of that hole.
The Creative Explorer Posted January 27, 2012 Author Posted January 27, 2012 A small update, because i've been busy, I couldn't do a whole lot, but my new paint came in and I was able to work on the floor. In this picture I added the first layer of paint with a brush, since it is too thick for an airbrush. After a second coat and some more color, the desired effect started to shoow. And 1 in daylight.
The Creative Explorer Posted February 1, 2012 Author Posted February 1, 2012 And another small update, I am having the feeling that I am to the end of this built, I only need to do a few small changes and add-ons and I think I am done. Edwin got himself a little in a mess in the back; I added some detail by some tools, just gives it a bit more weathered feel to it. Seen from the top A little bit fuzzy, but this is the drivers compartment. I made with tape the hood-straps, and with paint gave it a little wheatered look.
The Creative Explorer Posted February 1, 2012 Author Posted February 1, 2012 I made some holes in the dashboard, to simulate the area where normally the dials are. I made a few wires, to give the look of fallen out dials. It is a little hard to see without flash But a lot better with I added the battery and the radio, together with some wiring. I think I need to wheather the wires a little bit more.
The Creative Explorer Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 Thanks! I also like how it is coming together.
rustybill1960 Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Super Awesome Diorama there Erick! I like what you have done with the kit!! it will be interesting to see how you finish this off too! Thank You for sharing Later Russ
HotRodaSaurus Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Hi, this looks great and has given me a few ideas for my own Rommel's Rod. I love the skeleton weathering techniques and a few extra bits and pieces you have added really make this model 'Come alive' Just wanted to point out, the Generals name was actually Erwin Rommel, actually quite a respected soldier by friend and foe. he even gets a good write up in the Jewish Virtual Library. But we diversify. John
David G. Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Excellent work, Erik! I love the weathering effects and the extra detail you've added. The diorama setting will kick it over the top! David G.
The Creative Explorer Posted February 5, 2012 Author Posted February 5, 2012 Thank you guys! Somebody on another board gave me a nice idea; spiderwebs. But it is a difficult thing to make in 1/24 and haven't been able to find a tutorial on the interweb. Due to someone in I think trainmodelling, it gave me an idea. To work with Humbrol Clearfix and some toothpics to add small litte wires and make it look like spiderwebs. I didn't put too much in, but just enough to be noticable and look nice. Now I need to do the last difficult challenge; making the car appear from the hole in the Desert. Even wat foto's van de spinnenwebben:
David G. Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 The cobwebs are great! Nice addition. David G.
Darren B Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 (edited) yes the cobwebs really bring it out, have to try that myself on a build im doing. Edited February 8, 2012 by Darren B
Tony T Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Looks good! Love the cobwebs! The base is very nice, too!
