cam Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 looking good so far Kurt, I really like the ( Pete) heat shield.
Old Albion Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Just out of interest. Did GMC ever make the General with an extended hood and also did they ever offer the 12V71 as an option? Dave
Jim B Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 From what I've found, the General was offered with (2) hoods: a 116" BBC & a 108" BBC. There was also a SBFA option which is really rare. As for the engine, the 8V92N which comes in the kit was not offered as an option, but the 8V92TA was. I don't think a 12V71 would fit with the 116" BBC hood.
BigBad Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Jim is right GM had those 3 hood styles, only the SBFA had square headlights as thes others had the round ones. The General hit the streets in 1977, the 12V71 was offered in the Astro/Titan up until I think 1975. Since the 8V92TA was quite powerful itself (at the time 475hp), GMC probably didn't feel the need for the V12 at that time. But a nice "phantom" General with a 12V71 would still look interesting...
Turbo590 Posted December 7, 2011 Author Posted December 7, 2011 (edited) This would make sense....take the old Brockways for example...From what I have seen the "buzzin" dozen was up until year 1974...there after...they kind of went to the way side....then the General was in late 76-77 intro...so it was never to happen from the factory to shoehorn a 12-cylinder under the current hood would be a feat...BUT how cool would that sound then??? Kurt Edited December 7, 2011 by Turbo590
BigBad Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 "...to shoehorn a 12-cylinder under the current hood would be a feat...BUT how cool would that sound then???" Well, let's see, if a big 6 cylinder such as a Cummins or a Cat fits under the hood... I don't see why a Detroit V12 wouldn't fit, it's just about as long, a little lower, but it is wider. It would probably take the longer hood to achieve a good fit. While we're at it, let's install dual air filers too, I don't think any 1:1 scale General had those, I'm fairly confident about that. As a matter of fact the silver and blue one in Smokey and the Bandit II only had one air filter on the right side too, I would have tought that one would be THE showcase to get them. I have a soft spot for GMC's so evrytime there is one of the big ones around I have a look. Come to think of it, I'm starting to like the sound of that 12V71, I'm kidding! I always did!
Jim B Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 (edited) Yup, that's the one! Edited December 8, 2011 by Jim B
Tony Bryan Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Nice, this is really going to pop with that old school paint job
cappy625 Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 did the 12v71 have two blowers on it. i think thats the same engine they used in the older euclids.
BigBad Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 (edited) did the 12v71 have two blowers on it. i think thats the same engine they used in the older euclids. Yep there's 2 of 'em. These V12's have been used in a lot of earth moving equipment such as Euclid and Terex trucks, mostly and I think in some of their bigger loaders and Bulldozers. Edited December 13, 2011 by Z06Bob
dad vader Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 The 12V71 is actually just 2 6V71 Blocks bolted together with a plate.Basically it is two independant engines runing on a bolted crankshaft. Each half of the 12V has its own geartrain and blower.
Ben Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 You can find 1/25 versions of the Detroit Diesel V12 in the AMT, Tyrone Malone Super Boss and Bandag Bandit kits.
Turbo590 Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 Update 1/9/2012 Finally some primer is flying....should have a rolling chassis in the next few weeks....Kurt Add a modified front hub assembly
BigBad Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Lookin' good, Keep it up! What are the long rods in front of the front shocks for? Radiator side supports?

Tony Bryan Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Kurt Good to see you have the paint flyin, like how you hold your frame, great Idea Can't wait to see it with that engine fitted,
Turbo590 Posted January 11, 2012 Author Posted January 11, 2012 Lookin' good, Keep it up! What are the long rods in front of the front shocks for? Radiator side supports? Bob....Thanks The rods are for the radiator side supports. Kurt
scale trucker Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 kurt i see the cab was painted before would you like a new cab and hood??
Turbo590 Posted January 12, 2012 Author Posted January 12, 2012 kurt i see the cab was painted before would you like a new cab and hood?? Gordon.... When I aquired the kit several months ago...it was from a local estate auction...the older gentleman passed away...of all the kits I got...he painted the cab and hood assemblies....this particular one was red in color...I then stripped it. The AMT General kit has always had warpage issues...I got most of the parts pretty well straightened out...the cab was pretty bad....if you have an extra General cab...I would be interested in talking to you. I did find a Bison cab...new, the cab mold, was not up to my minimum standards to even use...Let me know. Thanks, Kurt I am good on the hood.
Old Albion Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Kurt, Its good to see your making progress on this one. Keep up the good work. Dave
Turbo590 Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 Just a little update....still waiting for a few parts...should have a rolling chassis soon. The finished "pile" is starting to grow. Kurt
BigBad Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 Hey, it looks like you use Alclad paint. Which finish did you use for the fuel tanks and battery box? Also, which clear coat do you use for a sealer? By the way, the Peterbilt exhaust shield... On a GMC? Looks nice despite the name though! I'm kidding, I like what I see!
cowboysevens Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 them parts all look good, cant wait to see it comin together
Truck parts Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Kurt, Looks like it's coming along very nice.
