MarkJ Posted December 13, 2011 Author Posted December 13, 2011 I really like watching this build up, might have to try one myself. As far as an engine goes, the Revell Dodge engine is little more than a Chevy with valve covers anyway. If you use a revell Dodge engine it would not fit between the frame rails or allow enough room for a radiator. It is just too big at 1/24 scale to fit in this 1/25 scale model.
diymirage Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 you can turn a chevy into a dodge but you can't squeeze an engine in it ? i think you need to reconsinder
MarkJ Posted December 15, 2011 Author Posted December 15, 2011 you can turn a chevy into a dodge but you can't squeeze an engine in it ? i think you need to reconsinder Its just a shelfer. No need for an engine.
MarkJ Posted December 15, 2011 Author Posted December 15, 2011 Added the grille to the front and whatever holds the spoiler on the real car to the rear spoiler.
MarkJ Posted December 19, 2011 Author Posted December 19, 2011 Here are some shots after the first two color priming. I will block sand the top white color off to reveal the gray undercoat and this should get rid of a lot of dips , scratches and pin holes. When you first start to sand white dots ,lines and spots will appear. These are pinholes, sand scratches and depressions. The dark lines and spots that appear are high spots and ridges. If you continue to sand just until the white primer goes away you should have a pretty smooth body ready for the final primer coat. I have to decide if the final color looks better over white primer or dark gray. I sprayed two small pieces of styrene with each primer and will paint them with the blue and compare them to actual pictures of the real car to see which is closer.
MarkJ Posted December 20, 2011 Author Posted December 20, 2011 Got it reprimed but realized I had forgotten the sharkfin that extends down the side of the backglass and over to the rear spoiler. I thought i would be able to shoot the blue this Thursday but I guess not.
bbowser Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 This is going great Mark. I agree, forget the engine. Cup cars are all about the body anyway.
MarkJ Posted December 23, 2011 Author Posted December 23, 2011 Almost forgot the sharkfin. Added it this morning. Need to reprime the body one more time and I think I will finally be able to shoot the blue. The Tamiya paint goes on so smoothly I am hoping I wont have to polish it out.
slantasaurus Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 (edited) Lookin good Mark, I was gonna ask you about the shark fin but you caught it. Can't wait to see Bad Brads car done. Edited December 24, 2011 by slantasaurus
MarkJ Posted December 26, 2011 Author Posted December 26, 2011 Thanks,Ron. I found a big picture of Brad's car at the Carlisle website which will help greatly in making the decals.
slantasaurus Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Have you tried Penske's website, there should be some good pics there too I would think.
MarkWelby Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Looking Fantastic! I can't wait to see it in blue and decaled!
MarkJ Posted December 27, 2011 Author Posted December 27, 2011 Have you tried Penske's website, there should be some good pics there too I would think. Yes, i found many photos at Brad's website but the one at Carlisle was huge and big pictures dont pixalate as badly when you reduce them to fit the model. they have more pixels per inch to start with.
MarkJ Posted December 28, 2011 Author Posted December 28, 2011 As I post this I had just finished shooting the blue and it turned out ok. These are the ready for paint pics. Hopefully I can get the painted pictures posted tommorow.
MarkJ Posted December 29, 2011 Author Posted December 29, 2011 Got it painted. Looks darker in real life.
Dirkpitt289 Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 This is a very cool project. I really like what you've done here. I have to agree with the person who said that cup cars are all about the body finish. I wouldn't sweat the motor.
MarkJ Posted December 31, 2011 Author Posted December 31, 2011 If you haven't built one of these kits yet this is what the finished interior/chassis looks like. With a little bit of paint you can make it look a lot better when the body is installed over it. To get the 1/4 glasses to fit, first you put some masking tape behind the window opening. Then cut it out with a #11 xacto blade. Then you stick the tape to the back of the 1/4 glass and cut the excess plastic off making it a little larger than the opening. You then take sanding sticks and slowly remove material till the glass fits in the opening. All thats left is putting a new border around the glass.
MarkJ Posted December 31, 2011 Author Posted December 31, 2011 Amt chose to put black lines thru the Goodyear lettering which the real cars don't have. I took a sharpened tooth pick and touched up the letters. I will seal the tires later with some clear dull coat lacquer.
MarkWelby Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 This is coming out unbelievable, what a nice job! Thanks for all the helpful tips and sharing that details. Looking forward to the completed car.
MarkJ Posted January 1, 2012 Author Posted January 1, 2012 Got the model done except for the antennas on the roof, the fuel filler and some detail painting. Only big thing left is finishing the decal sheets.
bbowser Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Looking real good Mark. I'm looking for 'bad Brad' to do big things this year. I haven't heard who Penske plans to put in the 22 yet.
