spkgibson Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 This is what I started with, It was Orange, And in really bad shape, I stripped it, Did some body work, Then repainted everything, The Colors I went with were '1970 Oldsmobile Burnished Gold,With the One Coat Testors Clear, With A Gold interior, Also 1970 GM real car paint. I did no detailing at all,I also blacked out the chassis, Like the 71-75 Jo-Han Olds promos were made, Mine was gray, I wanted to go for the promo look, On to the photos, Enjoy.
Chuck Most Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Great save! I did kinda like how it looked in orange, though.
spkgibson Posted November 19, 2011 Author Posted November 19, 2011 Great save! I did kinda like how it looked in orange, though. So did I, But the car was so scratched up, It looked like it was ran across cement on its roof . I'm happy with the color I used, The paint I used on this is over 20 years old, I have a quart of the stuff. It was giving to me by my cousin when he still worked painting real cars, I just poured some in a jelly jar, half way, Then thinned it half way, Oh by the way everything was painted around 4 o'clock today, And snapped back together just before the photos were taking, Ah I love my airbrush with my fast drying thinner.
surfjunke Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 Great restoration work. Looks really cool & I like the color choice.
spkgibson Posted November 22, 2011 Author Posted November 22, 2011 Outside photo with better lighting,
spkgibson Posted November 22, 2011 Author Posted November 22, 2011 After speaking with Joe Wheat from Wheats Nostalgia about how the chassis should be done, I repainted it the same color as the interior, To make it look more accurate , But the 70 Toronado Promo I was told was never done in the "Burnished Gold" So now I have a one of a kind promo, I enjoyed restoring this, I have been keeping myself from foiling the car though, I'll see how long that lasts, I also found a kit front bumper in better shape I'm waiting on to replace the one on there now, I'll put that one on for display untill I can get the other one repaired and send the bumpers and wheels out to be replated. Here's a look at the chassis.

philo426 Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Looks good!I think a black-wash on the grille would make it look even better!
spkgibson Posted November 23, 2011 Author Posted November 23, 2011 Looks good!I think a black-wash on the grille would make it look even better! After I get the other bumper, I may do that, I'm also thinking about foiling it. I talked to Wheat's again yesterday, And he told me the car is now worth $100-$150 , Being restored, If I would have gone with the original colors it would have been around the same, The car was the orange, Which I thought looked nice,But was ruined by being played with by the original owner, Black interior with a gray unpainted chassis. I payed $60 For the car in that shape, It was a case of overbidding on it, In the shape it was in, It was a $35-40 promo at shows, I payed way to much for it, As far as the paint , I had that sitting around the house, So the total cost for the restore, Is the price of the car, And the $5 for the better front bumper. My AMT annual I just posted in the what did you get thread cost me $10 less then this one, Oh well. I didn't feel guilty about redoing this car because of the shape it was originally in.
Danno Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 It would look great with some wash and BMF. But, if you only concerned about the dollar value for a promo collector, well ...
Duntov Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Wow!! You really nailed the promo look.... don't foil it though as that will kill the promo look quickly... I have several promos in my collection and this one looks quite good..... you did a really good job on it!!! Regards Bill (Duntov)
