62rebel Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 i've spent a couple of hours wandering the dark corridor of the internet known as Ebay.... i need a shower and some antibiotics. i find myself confused by the question, are these people really that deluded as to the value and rarity of the stuff they're hawking? or are they hoping that their potential customer is unaware of the facts? i'm THAT much more certain that i won't buy off ebay anymore..... of course, if i knew that my stash of bits and pieces were worth the national debt, i'd have sold them on ebay.
martinfan5 Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 I know what you are talking about, but dont let some the bad sellers keep away, you just look to find the good stuff. It amaze's me at the price's some sellers are trying to sell kits for. And whats even funnier is seeing a kit that one seller has priced $20 or over other sellers selling the same kit.
Kaleb Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 Not all are bad I have bought kits for under fifteen and even under 10.00 including shipping. I did once buy 4 kits for 16 which included shipping.
Terror Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 It's simple don't buy if you don't like the price. They don't hold a gun to your head.More for me, never had a problem there, over 1000 buys.
Greg Pugh Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 Personally, I like ebay. There's a certain kit that I've been waiting and watching for at the model car show swap meets I've attended for over two years now. I finally got tired of waiting and decided I was going to grab one off of ebay. I won an auction within an hour and a half and the kit showed up three days later. It's not all bad.
martinfan5 Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 alot of the people selling model kits on ebay are not modeler's the are people that buy collections , and are selling the kits to make make what they spent and to make a profit. I find a kit on ebay that I want( which isnt hard at all), I will always search and see how many of the kit I want and see who is selling the cheapest. Yes some of the price's and shipping some sellers are charging is high, but just keep looking.
Terror Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 Most of the time I can get a kit for under $20 sent to the house.
62rebel Posted November 24, 2011 Author Posted November 24, 2011 hmm. i'm not whining about pricing, per se; knowledge about what they're selling, basically..... sore subject, so i'll shut up.
martinfan5 Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 (edited) The ones that annoy me are the guys who part out the kits, then list all the parts seperately. I agree with you there, and they sell the parts for what you could buy the whole kit for, to me they are just trying to rip people off. hmm. i'm not whining about pricing, per se; knowledge about what they're selling, basically..... sore subject, so i'll shut up. Just be a little more what you are talking about I guess, I dont think there is a guide on the valve of mode kits, or maybe there is and i just dont know about it. Just explain a little more about what you are talking about Edited November 24, 2011 by martinfan5

FASTBACK340 Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 e-Bay is only as evil as your in-experience. If you know what kits are worth, just ignore the gougers. Some sellers think they have gold ( there's been a guy selling a `68 Barracuda annual kit for $450 for a while now...) that will never sell them (mint condition it's about $125-175) There's also people whom realize they need money more than product and will sell cheap to get cash. Ya just gotta SHOP....

Ya just gotta SHOP.... I don't "Bay", so I am curious, these sellers that are trying to strike gold, do they have to pay a posting fee? Is it possible they get stuck with more fees each time they re-post? I have heard the term "FeeBay", just wondering how anyone makes a profit after fees.
bandit1 Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 i am also going to add in that if you know what to do you can literally find a rare kit for nothing pretty much! say for instance my 78 chev step side thats 2 wheel drive i found for like 30 bucks but there was another kit unstarted going for over 200 dollars! but mine was assembled complete and unpainted! im in the process of restoring it! its just you gotta find the ones that dont know anything about modeling!
Dragline Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 I have sort of given up on eBay. I have wanted an Ecto 1A for the longest time but every time I look they are more than I want to spend. THEN, I go to a MAMA meeting and BAM, there is one sealed for 25 bucks. And get this, underneath it is an Aoshima Back To The Future car MIB. I only had 17.oo left and the guy sold it to me for that! I've seen these BTTF cars go for waaaay more than that on FleaBay. Lesson learned. Patience is key. Bob
trogdor Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 Set a limit on what you want to spend and be patient. There are still good deals on ebay. Just don't be too quick to bid.
62rebel Posted November 24, 2011 Author Posted November 24, 2011 as Futurabat said, there's the guys who try to sell kits piece by piece; if you search back and forth you'll find them selling most of, if not ALL, of the kit separately.... now; the buys that i've made on the 'bay have been good and i feel good about them, don't get me wrong; it's the feeling of having to wade through swamp muck for an hour and a half to find a decent kit..... shoot; i went to the LHS yesterday evening and came out with a new pack of #11 blades, when i really wanted a new project to start on..... too darn picky i suppose. i'm waiting for the paint to cure out on my Hudson before i touch it again.
Evil Appetite Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 Most people are delusional when it comes to kit prices, but A few people are quite aware that a model kit is not a commodity. the most I've paid for a rare oop kit was the Johan 442 Olds, paid $29.00 and another $7 bucks for shipping. These people are few and far between, but they're out there
Evil Appetite Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 (edited) Another thing...when you find someone who has fair prices, dont be afraid to ask them if they have any other kits that arent listed, and if they are willing to part with them. I did that when i lost a Buy It now for a Monza Army FC. I asked him if he had any others. We began a correspondence via email and ended up buying 24 oop PS and FC kits for $125 bucks. A great deal, so as I said, dont be afraid to ask. Edit: and for those who are wondering..how the heck do you lose a Buy It Now?? I clicked a fraction of a second after someone else.the seller got both notifications at the same time...with a few 10th's of a second difference between us hehe Edited November 25, 2011 by Evil Appetite
walt francis Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 The ones I like are the ones selling built kits labeled {Pro Built} and it is slapped together and asking ungoddy prices ...Yea good luck to you guys.
Junkman Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 i've spent a couple of hours wandering the dark corridor of the internet known as Ebay.... i need a shower and some antibiotics. i find myself confused by the question, are these people really that deluded as to the value and rarity of the stuff they're hawking? or are they hoping that their potential customer is unaware of the facts? i'm THAT much more certain that i won't buy off ebay anymore..... of course, if i knew that my stash of bits and pieces were worth the national debt, i'd have sold them on ebay. Once you have weaned yourself from Ebay and TV, you will start to re-realize that the world is actually quite a nice place full of sensible people.
Harry P. Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 It's human nature to want the highest price for your stuff. And if there are people willing to pay outrageous prices, well, so be it. It's called the free market. Seller can ask whatever price they want, it's up to the buyer to either accept the price, or look elsewhere. I don't see the problem here, and I don't see why so many people are bashing ebay. Ebay doesn't tell the seller what price to charge, and doesn't force anyone to buy anything. All they do is offer a service (yes, for a fee... because ebay isn't Santa Claus, it's a business) where buyers and sellers can meet. The rest is up to the buyers and sellers.
martinfan5 Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 Ebay is a great place to get kits for a lot cheaper then LHS or online stores if you just have patients and doing a little searching and dont go after the first kit you see. Yes some sellers have no idea what they are trying to sell, and dont realism that the price's they are selling for are way to high. Like I said early, alot of the sellers are not modelers, but people trying to make money, they are the ones that buy collections, and then are the sellers that are just hoping that some sucker will come along and pay them want they want.
Guest Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 Personally, I love ebay! I just picked up a '62 Catalina custom for $12.19 shipped and the '37 Ford pickup for $14.99 shipped. You just have to be patient and ignore the crazy sellers. You have the choice of who you buy from. There are a lot of great and knowledgable sellers on ebay that have great service and affordable shipping rates. 98% of my collection has been bought on ebay. I won't shop for kits anywhere else.
