SuperStockAndy Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 What other alternatives to bolt heads are there, besides hexagon styrene and the RB Motion ones? I have nothing against the RB Motion ones, they're just too expensive for me.
MicroNitro Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 There are photo etch ones and there is Scale Hardware.
gluebomb Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 If you are just looking for nut and bolt head detail The Model Car Garage has a photo etched fret, part number MCG-2279. I hopes this helps.
mannyclub Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Protech has nice ones! http://protechmodelparts.com/carpartscatalog.htm Item # PTMC 7 Manny
george 53 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Check out the railroad section at your LHS. A company called Grainger make ALOT of different bolts, bolt heads and nuts in a few different scales. They are pretty well detailed(if you CAN detail a bolt head)and look pretty good when you use them.
randx0 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 speaking of train section there is also tichy train group and grandt line have some decent plastic nuts bolts and rivits .
SuperStockAndy Posted December 16, 2011 Author Posted December 16, 2011 (edited) Thanks everyone, but I should've been more specific. The photoetch ones are still too expensive for me. Yes, I'm VERY cheap.... Sorry.. Edited December 16, 2011 by Andy C.
george 53 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Andy, Randy's right, the Nuts and Bolt sets ARE from Grandt Line.Sorry.
Harry P. Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 If cost is the bottom line you're not going to find anything cheaper on a "per bolt" basis than just using slices of hex styrene rod to make bolt heads.
SuperStockAndy Posted December 16, 2011 Author Posted December 16, 2011 Thanks everyone. I guess that if I don't want to spend some money, I'm SOL
randx0 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 well back in the old days guys would file down pins into a hex shape but i think you would be limited as to size and i have no ideahow to maintain consistency.
SuperStockAndy Posted December 16, 2011 Author Posted December 16, 2011 Yeah, I don't have the patience for that.
randx0 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 No money and no patience, then I guess I havent an idea as to what exactly you were hoping for.
SuperStockAndy Posted December 16, 2011 Author Posted December 16, 2011 I'm an extremely cheap and impatient guy, so I guess my only option is hex rod then..
Harry P. Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 i've never had much luck with slicing thin pieces of styrene hex rod, is there a trick or secret tip to doing that so they come out straight and square? I make fake bolt heads with hex rod. No neat trick I could tell you... I create about as many crooked ones as good ones. But even if I have to throw half of them out, it's still way cheaper than any aftermarket stuff or micro-scale actual fasteners. I agree that there are alternatives out there, but nothing as cheap on a per piece basis than styrene hex rod.... and Andy's bottom line was cost.
Crazy Ed Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Here ya go A Little Dab'll do ya There's thousands of fastners in each marker!
SuperStockAndy Posted December 17, 2011 Author Posted December 17, 2011 I've got one of those, I'm looking for an actual hexagon shaped head though. Sorry to be so critical
Crazy Ed Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 I've got one of those, I'm looking for an actual hexagon shaped head though. Sorry to be so critical No Problem. Hey, you could trim the tip Reeeeaaallllyyyyy carefully
SuperStockAndy Posted December 17, 2011 Author Posted December 17, 2011 My hand's too shaky for that.
roadhawg Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 This is one of those times that the best way to be cheap is to spend a little money. In this case, save your pennies and purchase one of these... http://umm-usa.com/onlinestore/product_info.php?cPath=21_145&products_id=1870 You will then be able to create a lifetime supply of perfectly shaped miniature bolt heads as long as you have something to punch them out of....scrap plastic, soda cans, even cardstock. It doesn't take long to save 50 bucks......thats less than 2 bucks a day for a month.
LDO Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Thanks everyone. I guess that if I don't want to spend some money, I'm SOL Pretty much.
