I really don't understand sometimes how the prices on eBay get to be the way they do. And why some bidders drive the price up to ridiculous levels. Take, for example, the simple Revell Chevy Van with Race Trailer. Yes, I know it hasn't been released in a while. But this auction is currently up to $61. There's another auction currently at a starting price of $44.99 and a Buy-It-Now for $49.99. Just last month I purchased the exact same kit PLUS a Pro-Street Chevelle for only $35. I guess its worth a lot more to some people...

Anyone else with crazy eBay stories?

My ex brother in-law is a salesman for Ford. I asked him one day why pick-ups have become so dam expensive. He said, "Because people are willing to pay that much."

dont forget that alot of the ebayers are COLLECTORS!

then they resale it on ebay at higher price then they paid to make a buck and thats how some of these kits get to the point the BUILDER cant buy em without paying ridiculous prices!

I like it when I see kits like the Revell Mean Mudder van kit listed with a starting price of 149.00! Really?! I love that kit but it's not worth that much! Something else that's funny is you'll see a model listed for 100.00 and then scroll down the list to about five listings below it and the exact same kit will be listed for 9.99!

The kit you want will most likely show up on Ebay at a decent price, you just have to be patient. What I do when looking for a specific kit is to perform a search with title and description and then save that search and have it sent to my email on a daily basis. That way, when the kit is listed at a decent price I can catch it relatively quick.

Supply and demand. Also, with this particular item, sellers are probably jacking up the price because they know Revell is reissuing it soon...like the Gremlins and Manxes that appeared on eBay w/ high prices in recent weeks...

You see the same kits with unrealistic prices listed for literally years continuously- also quite a few good deals out there- not sure anything "crazy" or even particularly interesting

Have you actually heard that they are reissuing the Mean Mudder as the Mean Mudder? That would be very cool as I only have one!

Why does this topic show up so persistently? It is as regular as clockwork. I don't get why anyone is surprised by eBay auction results.

They are reissuing the Revell '77 Chevy van...same kit, isn't it? Different box art..

Nope, just went and looked at the new release. It's a direct reissue of the Chevy van from the van and race car hauler trailer kit from several years ago.

The Mean Mudder is completely different. It comes with a removable high top roof, hard vinyl tires (same wheels and tires as those found in the Ice Patrol kit, just not chrome) and the van body has slight ground effects.

1) Wait for it........IT'S AN AUCTION! If more than one person wants the item, the bidding goes up - it's just that simple. If you're not willing to go as high as another bidder, don't bid - it's even simpler.

2) If you got a better deal elsewhere a month ago, why are you shopping Ebay for it now(and griping about it)?

Ebay, like any other auction, can be 'feast or famine.' A couple years ago, I sold a small VW dealer toy for the opening bid of $3.99....two weeks later, after a pretty heated bidding war between two collectors, I sold an identical item for $17.

Heck- I've even been crazy enough every once in a while to pay more than "normal" price for an item I wanted at the moment just encuraging those nutty sellers.............

Also, for the record, that Mean Mudder van was issued many times in several different kits with and without accessories like motorcycles and such but the Mean Mudder version has always been my favorite!

I think some of us have seen a cretin seller selling half of a parts tree for $19.99 , when half the time you can find the whole kit on ebay for less .

You wanna see crazy????? This IS a cool kit and IT IS OOP, but seriously???

As has been said here, anything is worth what the market will bear; no more, no less. Good luck to those folks bidding on this one. I have to use an oxygen mask to even look at this one.

Wow!

I've paid less than that for a Pocher model!

It's always funny to watch two bidders fight each other minutes or even days before auction end! Stupid! Why place a bid early just so someone can go in behind you and either jack up the amount you have to pay or knock you out of the auction to where you have to try and outbid them!? Figure out how much your willing to pay and in the last few seconds, if the price shown is lower than what your willing to pay, then you bid. If you win by being the highest bidder, great, if not just wait the item will come around again.

Yep! That's getting to be a popular thing to do it seems. If someone wants to pay 3/4 of what the entire kit costs to get 1/20 of the whole kit, more power to them. Sure seems like a waste to me!

My favorite bit of Ebay crazy is a seller that goes by the ID of pj-toys......he had a gluebomb Manx up there a while back that he relisted a few times, and his listings were anywhere between $70 and $100. He no longer accepts questions(at least from me). Here's one of his spendy model parts listings:
