since i have an excellent reference vehicle out in the driveway, i've been changing stuff on the two F-350's i recently acquired in order to more accurately resemble the 1:1....

first off, my truck doesn't have the wide lower chrome trim, so some smoothing out of those areas was definitely in order. my truck isn't a Camper Special with the side spare box, either, so i'm getting rid of that detail on both beds... unfortunately, i only have ONE spare Monogram F-250 bed insert to modify to represent the plain bed floor (no passenger side spare cover)... i had to cut the front wall off the Monogram piece, then remove one rib from the floor to get the width correct. the height is so nearly correct that i'm not going to fuss with that. i also need to address the gas filler doors; AMT never updated them past '76 to represent the square filler doors.

then i looked at the grille..... no amount of detail painting was going to come across as holes, squared off holes at that.... so, out came the pinvise and i drilled two guide holes in each grille opening, then carefully and slowly whittled each one out, one by one.... and even after painting it, i wasn't satisfied with the openings and cleaned them out some more. it's soaking in bleach to get the rest of the chrome off, since the 1:1 isn't chrome but anodized aluminum.

i've been puzzling over representing the extra lower trim that Lariats have (the 1:1 is a Lariat) in the "valley" contour down the side.... got some half round, maybe that will work.

Curt, please post some progress shots of you're work , some of us would really like to see how you tackle the project ! Ed Shaver

Half round would work for the side cove trim, but I'm not sure why you'd need it- the kit already has it molded in.

Now, REMOVING that trim in that little valley is can be a pain! I've got one I'm planning to make into a base-level Crew Cab- removing that trim piece without damaging the cove is a project unto itself!

Im a noob to the modeling world and have a 78 ford f100, were can i find one of these kits to make my 1:1

Check with any of the online kit sellers like The Modelroundup, Dean's Hobby Shop, Fred Sterns. Be prepared to pay as this kit was a re-issue a few years ago and goes for $20-40. You might be able to find one on eBay. The Model King kit has the parts to build this as a 2WD as well as a 4WD.

I have to agree in removing the Ranger style trim . I have an un completed one I've been at for awhile trying to Back date a 79 back to a 78 Custom . Ed Shaver

I think the old AMT Bronco had the grille moulded open - whether it fits the F350 cab, I can't remember. The Bronco hood also has the F O R D lettering, but I do remember that it doesn't fit the pickup cab very well. Probably not much help...

Since you have a 1:1, can you clear up the issue of the wheelbase and wheelwell locations on the bed? I read something about the kit representing a camper special and therefore not being accurate for a regular F350. Is that just referring to the spare wheel housing, or are there other differences?

And unless your real truck is an F350,you'll need to move the rear fenderwell openings forward a few inches. I'm pretty sure Blue Oval Resinworks makes a corrected LWB bed.

the trim on the kit lower body is wrong; it's wide, and it's on the lowest section of the sheetmetal. my Lariat has a thin molding that follows the shallow contour around the wheelwells and down the bodyside.

the Bronco is even rarer than the '79 F350... i can whittle plastic for practically free.

now; the wheelbase and wheelwell openings are close enough already IMHO.... those side panels are thin, fragile, and fussy enough to work with before trying to move the openings a couple of scale inches. i am going to put some kind of spacer in between the inner and outer panels on the bed to keep the fenders straight. as is, they bow in noticeably.

no photobucket, no fotki. no online photo sharing albums.
