and NOT the lame-o remake from a coupla years ago....

ANYWAYS: here's what just tickled my funnybone....

so there's a bus loaded with various and sundry stereotypes driving across a bleak landscape...

a sandstorm has been quickly blowing up behind them and overtakes them, causing the driver to lose control and wreck the bus, after driving off the road and getting somewhat lost... (bear with me here)...

after the wreck, which OF COURSE has to result in a couple of fatalities (anybody who's had sex in the first minutes of the movie... nope, wrong franchise) the survivors crawl out and survey the damage.

the bus is whacked. there's a bent frame, and half the tires and wheels are destroyed..... but there's good news: the engine runs, the tanks are full (more or less) of fuel, and somehow they ended up wrecked not far from an abandoned scrapyard (groan; bear with me...)

most of the group want to walk out and find help; others want to wait for rescue; one man says he can build a vehicle from what is at hand if the rest will help.... (by the way, there's no cell service)...

and after days of hard labor, bringing the bus back from the dead all while the driver says it can't be done, it comes out that the engineer driving the group has only ever built MODEL CARS......

yep. that's it. sue me!

ummmm.... everything.

I agree , the original was cool

As for your "concept" above , one of my long term builds is a roofless '49 ford coupe with the body sectioned by a scale 4" and running a crank driven supercharged straight 8 Pontiac (I think pontiac from memory) flathead ... The idea behind the build was it was built by a couple of young fella's with whatever they could scrounge from the scrap heap at there fathers sawmill ...

The rear wheel flares were an experiment ... they're coming off again :)

Haven't seen the movie Curt...maybe I need to?

A thread I started a few years ago showing a scratchbuilt project of mine, was commented on by someone that said the detail I put into the build reminded them of this old movie...would that be a positive or a negative comment?

never watched the original (didn't know there was one until seeing this thread actually...) but the remake is a good movie in my opinion, good enough to at least own on DVD lol. Good cast, interesting plot, fair amount of comedic relief, etc. Plus c'mon it has Hugh Laurie in it (aka Dr. House), THIS movie actually landed him the role of "House, MD" so it can't be that bad.

i'd say positive, myself...

modern day movie remakes almost defy logic.... if it was a good movie THEN, why rehash it with "fresh faces" and over-the-top special effects (re: the day the earth stood still) JUST to have a new film? and, on the other hand, if it was a BAD movie THEN... why bother trying to make good on garbage?

which begs the question: why are we off topic? i proposed a scenario based on the premise of a classic film but skewed towards our interest.... we got as lost as my poor victims!

Being innovative isn't about doing it first, it's about doing it better.... But back to your topic, that could make for a cool community build. Everyone start with the same kit, and "junk" it to get it road worthy after the storm.

the major problem with doing a community build would be what to base it on! i doubt many of us can pony up for a bus kit... i know i can't right now!

it wouldn't really "work" based on anything else.... not enough passenger capacity unless it's a bus. maybe...

since i gave the survivors access to a scrapyard..... maybe all they need to do is cobble together say, the engine from THEIR bus, onto a straight semi truck frame, but have to scrounge the rest of the running gear together AND fabricate some structure to ride in so they can ALL make it out....

and.... part of the scrapyard contains mothballed aircraft.... and a pack of very very hungry wolves.

Posted

naaaah, no need for zombies... starving wolves would be enough!

ahhh... you know what? part of my scenario HAS been done, sort of... "Tremors", where they bug out of town riding in the back of a cutdown tanker truck pulled by a bulldozer.

still.... what's the smallest 1/25-1/24th bus kit out there right now?

Curt! You are ready for Hollywood!!! They are running short on writers these days so rewriting old movies is the best they can do. So a varient should "fly" pun intended!

The only remake I have recently seen (I usually avoid them like a plague) was True Grit and found it enjoyable. But that is because I have read the book and know the new one followed the book closer than the first which is still one of my all time favorite John Wayne movies!

I love the original Flight of the Phoenix! It had a really great breakdown of each character and a great storyline that pulled you in.

Can't stand all this new computer generated job killing garbage they call movies today! ^_^

One thing that is different between the car story and The Flight of the Phoenix is that the aircraft engineer designed flying models. Ones that need to be airworthy enough to fly without pilot corrections. I have seen too many static car builders that have no concept of how real vehicles actually work. Their models may look nice, but are far from being able to function if they were built in real life.

I like how cynical and callous Hardy Krüger's character was in the original.

Oh, and Barrie Chase's cameo appearance as a belly-dancer, of course.

Nah, they don't make them like this anymore...

There is no kit of a C-82 out there, is there?

like i mentioned above, i've never seen the original but i did watch the 2004 remake and thought it was pretty good. call me what you want but i thought Giovanni Ribisi's character as the "airplane designer and engineer" was played out pretty good.

predictable yes, but i bet the original movie was too

He is actualy one of my top fave actors, this movie being one of the reasons.

wouldn't the fact that the model car builder only built STATIC kits make it all the more ironic?

Ribisi is almost an overlooked actor... his agent needs to push for some leadin roles. his Medic in Private Ryan haunts me....

we'd be missing a critical character, though; no "co-pilot" in Attenborough for Harry Townes to explode on... no bus line requires a ridealong mechanic or co-driver....

C-82? I thought it was a C-119 "Flying Boxcar" At least the ORIGINAL, with Jimmy Sterwart was, if I remember correctly. :)

Really ?

Yes, I had heard it was about an airplane that was nicknamed the "flying box car"?

Update, ok, I'm lost on this topic? The original movie was about the same thing as the remake. Made in 1965 starring James Stewart. There was no bus or junkyard from what I read?
