Lownslow Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 one half my brain says its red primer then the other half is saying its maroon(british crimson) has anyone ever painted a car this color and had it come out good? i have stop light red metallic if all else fails but i for some reason cant see this color as a gloss color.
Lownslow Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 kinda what i want http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y281/charger4404spd/Charger/red-backleft.jpg what i dont want http://www.hodgerestorations.com/gallery2/68%20charger%20maroon0009.JPG
Dr. Cranky Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Frank, you are bringing up something interesting that happens to me with the color red. And believe me, I've tried a few times. No matter what I do to brighten the color for some reason when I put it on any model it looks dark to me. It might be something visual. I've even tried using white primer, sealer, and then the color to top, and they still look dark. Maybe it's all that rust I've got in my eyes. Personally, I like this color you have on the model, but it looks more ruddy brown to me than red red.
moparmagiclives Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 (edited) Is that a single stage paint or is it supposed to be cleared? If its a two stage paint it will brighten up with clear. Its got alot of brown in it, but I dont think it will come close to either of those colors your after. I wish I had a picture for you, but a few years ago, I helped my cousin do his full size Chevy in a Chrysler flame red color. I remember thinking it was the uglyest color of brown when I was laying out the flames. But it REALLY came to life with the clear. Edited February 2, 2012 by moparmagiclives
Lownslow Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 i changed the color to testors dark red im much happier with the result
Lownslow Posted February 3, 2012 Author Posted February 3, 2012 i tried the spoon test with gloss and it looked like ###### so i went to the store and got some testors dark red and im much happier now this was shot over the crimson
LoneWolf15 Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 The Stop Light Red Metallic shot over a silver base is a fabulous color , try it , you'll be amazed with the results ! As for what you have right now , overlay it with Bright Gold Pearl X mixed in your clear coat . You can also alternate it with coats of the Russet Red Pearl X , I know that you like to play with color , hence the suggestions !
Lownslow Posted February 3, 2012 Author Posted February 3, 2012 i never thought of chargers as the metallic paint having type i wanted a solid red for this just finding one that worked without it being "loud" was a problem
LoneWolf15 Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 The Testors Dark Red in the 1/4 oz bottles ? Perfect color for what you're looking for . I put the Stop Light Red on a Charger for a customer and I fell in love with it , hence that particular suggestion . If you do try the Dark Red , be sure to put it over top of a white base ! Anything else , it turns maroon .

Monty Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 (edited) Wish I had seen your post earlier - I would've recommended Model Master Boyd's Red. IMO it's got a certain tone that's closer to this http://i7.photobucke...ed-backleft.jpg than Testors Dark Red. Boyd's Kandy Scarlet might be close, too, although in my experience, it does not cover well over white primer or white plastic. Edited February 3, 2012 by Monty
jbwelda Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 i was going to suggest overshooting that maroon base coat with some tamiya clear red. looks good as it is though.
426hemiman Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 frank if you paint it yellow first than red it will pop !
wgflatliner Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 frank if you paint it yellow first than red it will pop ! This makes sense. I have seen cars with red paint fading and chipped and almost always has a yellow base
mikelo Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Looks close in color to this one. check out 69 Dodge 515 GTB built by Steve strope. Mike
