mrmike Posted March 26, 2012 Author Posted March 26, 2012 Jonathan, I have always been able to clearcoat after polishing. For me, polishing was the last step in getting paint as smooth as possible for clearcoat. The smoother the surface, the better the finish. I then wash the painted body with Dawn to remove any comtaminants and let it air dry. With that said, I did not clearcoat the Nova yet, and I probably won't. The paint is quite smooth and shiny and it would be better to leave it as is. If I was to clearcoat this paint, I would use my favorite clear gloss...Tamiya TS-13. BTW, this is a process that works for me and I am sure there are those who would disagree with me. You could try it for yourself and see if it works for you or not. Don't be afraid to experiment.
martinfan5 Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Mike, I have not clear coated after polishing yet, I clear coat first to give me a little bit more protection for burn through. Wait I take that back, I have, I used future, but the few times I did , it crack every where
Tom Setzer Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I did some research on the 69 Nova 427 Copo. Chevrolet only built 63 total, of which Donn Yenko bought 50, a couple of them went to Nikki Chevrolet, and the others went to dealers. The car became known as the Nova Lethal due to several Fatalities that it was involved in. Donn Yenko did his tunning magic on 39 of the Novas he bought, and sold them as The 69 Yenko Nova 427 SC, before deciding that they were just to dangerous at 560 hp, and over 670 fpt. He converted 10 into 396 SCs, and no one is sure what happened to the 50th car. I owned #17 of the 39 and used it for drag racing. This was one of the scarriest vehicles I ever owned. Your Copo is looking good!
mrmike Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 Thanks Jonathan and Tom! Tom, thanks for posting your research on the COPO Novas. This is far more interesting than the long-winded response I got from someone on another forum. So far, I am finishing up the Nova with installation of the chrome and then decals.
Dirkpitt289 Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 Nice work on the Nova Mike. You're not the first person I've heard rave about this kit. Were it that I was a Chevy man I might get one of these but alas I'm just not ready to cross that line yet.
mrmike Posted March 28, 2012 Author Posted March 28, 2012 Thanks Darrick and Dirk! Dirk, I build mainly Mopars and Fords, but this Nova offered me something different. Until something new in a Mopar or Ford comes along, I guess I'll be branching out into unknown territory.
SuperStockAndy Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 (edited) Chevrolet produced a total of 0 Nova's with the 427. any and all 427 Nova's are engine transplant cars, What engines did they come with? Google's only turning up 427s. Edited March 29, 2012 by SuperStockAndy
Casey Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 What engines did they come with? Google's only turning up 427s. Which engines did what come with? I did some research on the 69 Nova 427 Copo. You owned a Yenko 427 Nova and you didn't get Don Yenko's first name correct? The other dealership is Nickey Chevrolet. I think you need to do a lot more research.
SuperStockAndy Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Which engines did what come with? COPO Novas
SuperStockAndy Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Chevrolet only built Nova's with 396's. all the 427 cars were transplants after the factory, Motion, Yenko, etc. Cool, thanks.
Erik Smith Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 (edited) Very nice looking build so far Mike. I like the green. I have a friend with a 68 Nova, and I think a 383 (car is currently in parts in his garage). I drove it once. It was scary. I wasn't really prepared for the pull and craziness of that. Relatively light car with tons of power. Can't imagine one with a race tuned 427. I think they, of any car, could earn the nickname "Lethal". Edited March 29, 2012 by Erik Smith
