Dr. Cranky Posted February 8, 2012 Author Posted February 8, 2012 A friend of mine is making a documentary about them in Miami, New York, and Chicago. He's already put on a few extra pounds.
Eshaver Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 If ya want the Lunch wagons , anyone in Houston can visit the Taxi Cab staging areas in either Intercontinental , ( Bush ) or Hobby . They're all over the place there .............. Ed Shaver
Dr. Cranky Posted February 8, 2012 Author Posted February 8, 2012 Good to know, Ed. I am sure Houston must have a bunch of them, good ones too.
Nate Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 I think they're going to set up a food truck park in downtown Dallas in the near future, IIRC. I think it's supposed to be down near the new park they're building over Woodall Rogers Freeway near Uptown.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 10, 2012 Author Posted February 10, 2012 Remember, if you run across an interesting one share the picture here . . . Thank you.
drball Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I attended in Phoenix last October an evening lunch truck event where you paid $25 and got a wrist band to sample of the offerings as much as you liked from the 20 some trucks that were present. Young crowd and some us olders mixed in with a huge collection of hipsters. Quite the event with unique foods and positive vibes.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 10, 2012 Author Posted February 10, 2012 Dale, I am noticing that indeed very young people (lots of artist types) gravitate towards these kinds of eateries. Nothing wrong with that, of course.
Junkman Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 This is kinda funny, since I do collect all catering and ice cream van models I can get my hands on in diecast and in all scales. But it has never even occurred to me to build a model of one.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 10, 2012 Author Posted February 10, 2012 It's never too late to do one, Christian.
Junkman Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 It's never too late to do one, Christian. It kinda crossed my mind when I received the resin Bedford CA van from The Parts Box to make that one into an ice cream van.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 10, 2012 Author Posted February 10, 2012 I have a good candidate for a future project right here:
sjordan2 Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 The Food Network ran a reality series in 2010-2011 called "The Great Food Truck Race," which should provide plenty of inspiration. http://www.tv-links.eu/tv-shows/The-Great-Food-Truck-Race_24018/
Dr. Cranky Posted February 10, 2012 Author Posted February 10, 2012 Thanks, Skip, I'll look it up. I think Anthony Bourdain also had something about them recently.
drball Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 You are right Doctor, that was the majority of the crowd at the event. Very nice young people.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 10, 2012 Author Posted February 10, 2012 And hungry too, I bet. Nobody eats like the young! Us, older folk, well our stomach start to shrink after a while.
Danny Lectro Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 There is also an ongoing series on the Cooking Channel called "Eat St.," devoted to food trucks around the U.S. Food carts are a fixture in New York City (hot dogs, gyros, shish kebabs), but I haven't seen many lunch trucks around. I would see them every once in a long while back when I worked near Grand Central Station, but I never see them now that I work a little further uptown. I have heard that lunch trucks are a big business in parts of Brooklyn that are known as hipster enclaves, but I don't have much cause to travel that way these days.
Darin Bastedo Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I've got one of the short tag-a-long Galaxie Limited trailers that I plan to turn into a concession trailer. I think it would be neat on the contest table. Haven't decided on the menu though.
Tonioseven Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 They have them here at the casino where I work every other week. I'll try to get you guys a few pictures of some of them.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 Christian, those are great pictures. So the trucks are also a phenomenon over in your part of the world. That truck looks very unique and makes for an interesting subject.. Thanks for sharing. Pictures ARE welcomed, Tony.
northendmetalallstar Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 I've never seen them that nice here in Canada. I've only seen converted short buses and milk trucks. I've always called them "The Botulism Bus"... Looks like it would be a fun build though.
Dr. Cranky Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 Jay, that sounds like a great idea for a TZH build! LOL!
Junkman Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Christian, those are great pictures. So the trucks are also a phenomenon over in your part of the world. That truck looks very unique and makes for an interesting subject.. Thanks for sharing. Pictures ARE welcomed, Tony. Those Citroen H vans are a total cult. Usually our roach coaches are a lot less romantic. More often than not trailers are used. Some of them are quite spiffy. However, ice cream vans have always been lovingly decorated.
Dave Ambrose Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 This ain't your father's roach coach. Food trucks are a big thing in LA.On our visit to the Miracle Mile district, they were lined up and serving some really good food. We seem to have a good rotating set at my office here in San Diego, including one that serves excellent sushi.
Mercman Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 (edited) Speaking of Roach Coach's any one remember this one. I had the honor of helping push it into the auditorium for a car show many years ago. Edited February 13, 2012 by Mercman
