Paint is looking really good! On my laptop, that orange looks like it has some metallic to it. Is that the case or is it more of a straight color? Regardless, I like it.

I think TS12 is straight solid orange, pretty darn sure it has no metallic. Looks like there is a little dirt on the white but I'm sure you already fixed it?

There is a little orange peel that makes it look kind of "sparkly" in that picture, but it settled down as it dried.

TS-12 is solid opaque non-metallic orange.

Yes, I did remove the tape adhesive from the white, no sense risking the fresh paint to clean it up until dry.

I painted the engine block Testors Black Chrome Trim.

Nice! Have the same kit. Want to get to it shortly. Following your build for tips/hints as I tend to jump around also. Hope all the details work out and allow things to fit.

I'll try to impart what I learn to make it easier to build...

The wheels/tires are done except for the nuts. Since I machined the outer rims I cut the valve stems from the kit parts and used them.

Are you using all acrylics?

Post #24 mentions TS-12, which is Tamiya's orange lacquer, so he's probably using their black and white lacquer paints too.

Tamiya paints aren't availble around my neck of the woods. I usually use Duplicolor or MM lacquers. I thought the majority of Tamiya's paints were acrylics. But that's because I have never used them. Are you going build the car with opening doors?

Posted

The Tamiya lacquers are spray can only. The bottles are mostly acrylic in the USA, but I do have some Tamiya bottle enamels.

If I did not have the TS paints, I would use Testors enamels for this. Probably start with 1127 orange and adjust if needed.

The doors won't be done to open or come off. I hope to be able to "open and close" the rear cover, but if it ends up as a curbside, that's what it will be.

Thanks Roger. This one is more of an exercise to see what the kit builds. The next one (if I decide to go for it) might get some adjustments and additional or different detailing.

Looks great so far. I've heard a lot of horror stories about this kit, but you seem to be getting the best of it. How did you handle getting the decals over the fender louvers? They look great.

I'll reserve responding to the "nightmare" comment (I have heard it too) until I get closer to finishing it other than saying that there are some issues.

The decals don't go over the louvers, they go around them, I hand painted them after I applied the decals.

The engine is coming along and there are fit issues. Rather than fix them all, I am going to see how it goes on this one. I found it easier to install many of the vinyl lines to the sub-assemblies before mounting them to the engine. In some cases it looks like it would have been impossible to install the lines if I followed the directions verbatim.

The body has the decals on it and has been cleared.

Looking great! I can't wait to "attempt" this one. I have some in my stash ready for me to give them a try.

I can certainly identify with your painting the louvers to match the decals. I built the Miller IMSA Mustang many moons ago and had to mix the perfect color orange so the hood louvers matched the decals.

I am anxious to see more progress on this one and am definitely taking notes...

Mark, if this turns out as well as I think it will, is there any chance it might become your new avatar?
