Well...What can I say?

I got an AMT 1972 GTO kit from a friend (he just gave it to me) and now I know why!

Typical 70's AMT kit, one piece chassis with most of the suspension molded in, low parts count with no exterior mirrors and VERY little engine bay detail. While thumbing through the box I found a small ziploc bag with some resin stuff in it, a '70 GTO conversion kit, presumably from Dencon, and definitely cast from an old MPC '70 GTO kit.

The resin wasn't GREAT, but wasn't terrible for being cast from such an old kit, and it went together well once the proper measurments and incisions were made. The rear bumper from the kit was probably a scale foot too long for the car, so I cut it down. I also added some engine detail but not too much modifying was down (to keep frustration levels down) I bought a set of decals from Kieth Marks, and I must say, they are EXCELLENT! Turned out beautifully.

Alas, I have misplaced the dual exhaust tips I bought for it, and my grandson broke the rear spoiler off the other day while I was at school. It was a scratch built piece because I have not yet located the correct deck spoiler. So I am now in the proccess of making another...

Anyway, turns out you CAN polish a turd!

Comments and criticisms welcome!

I have this kit. I opened it when I first bought it, looked through it for a few minutes, and all but gave up on it. Seeing yours, I'm thinking about maybe giving it another look. Definitely a silk purse from a sow's ear.

That kit is so ratty, caz it's popped from the original 70 MPC mold. It was never an AMT kit, until AMT got bought by round two, and their group. It's not a bad kit at all, I've built ALOT of them, just gotta think in 1970 terms! Those were WAYYYYYY before we got detailed kits like we get today! It's fun build, theres even a 72 kit out, so WHY did whoever buy a resin conversion kit?

Nice work. Has the right look and stance. Good job on this kit - I built one years ago and remember it being pretty disheartening to a young modeler.

It was actually an RC2 repop of the '72 kit, and he bought the coversion because at the time it was cheap, suposedly "easy", and he couldn't find the MPC '70 kit.

nice job. what did your friend think of the final result?

I showed it to him this afternoon, seeing how it turned out and being a bit disappointed with letting it go, he offered to "buy" it back

The '72 kit is the doner kit to finish the resin body which is most likely a casting from the MPC kit of the '70 GTO. I have a conversion kit myself with separate corrected parts...lights [head lights(clear resin),turn signals(clear), and rear(red)], the rear spoiler, front chin spoiler, and even found some correct splitter exhaust tips.
