cherokeered Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 What is everyone using for a paint mask. I have been using a 3M Model 6001 one I picked up at Lowes or Home Depot a while back....it seems to work good except lately I'm starting to smell the paint....might be time to change the canisters. Just wondering what everyone else uses and if this one is a good choice or I should upgrade.
Kit Basher Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 If you can smell paint now, and couldn't before, the mask was working and it's time to replace the cartridges. Also replace the paper filters if it has them. I doubt if manufacturer makes a whole lot of difference (I have a Binks), the main thing is that it fits you well and really seals to your face. To get maximum life out of the canisters, keep the mask in a sealed plastic bag when not in use. HTH
trogdor Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 I use a 3M half face respirator. I forget which model I've got offhand but I spray a lot of nitrocellulose lacquers, and other pre and post catalyzed coatings for cabinets I build. If I were in my shop I could give you model numbers for cartridges I use which are very effective. When you smell the coating, it's time to change cartridges. By the way don't forget your skin and eyes can absorb VOCs too. Unless you have exceptional ventilation you may want to consider a full face mask as well as long sleeved shirts and full pants. You only have one body, take care of it.

Paper suits are cheap nowadays.....Cabinetmakers or smokers...........I know Ricks reasons....... :P
jayhkr Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 That's my next "investment" I don't spray a lot, but after my first airbrushing I will make it a much MUCH higher priority. After reading all the other posts from you guys on here I'm putting my airbrush compressor search on hold and looking for a good mask now. I was at Home Depot and saw their 3M cartridge mask, but I didn't see the replacement cartridges. Going to check out Lowes tomorrow.
