Harry I think you nailed it regarding cell coverage and population density. If you look at a cell coverage map of Nevada, you will see that Clark county in the south, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, and Laughlin are covered. Washoe county and Douglas county in the north, Reno/Sparks, Carson City, Lake Tahoe are covered.

That's it! The remainder of the state is hit and miss, literally. Those are the population centers of Nevada. Everywhere else is either open desert, bomb range, or so sparsely populated as to be vacant.

There is a large gap in coverage in between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City as well. There's also a long stretch of I 70 in Utah that has NOTHING, no cell phone service, no exits, no NOTHING.

There's quite a bit of this country that is wide open still.

G

Yeah, I've seen quite a few wide open spaces....I've driven across the void from Reno to SLC to Cheyenne before, I-40 from Flagstaff AZ to Albuquerque and vice versa many times (when driving between Phoenix and Denver), I-80 across Nebraska, Phoenix to LA on I-10, Phoenix to San Diego via Yuma and I-8, etc..

Vast empty areas where cruise control is good to have, never let the gas tank go below half a tank, have plenty of coffee or Red Bull, and often not have a cell phone signal...

No cell service, or cable tv here. Just NBC, PBS and a land line.

No wonder you call yourself "old hermit!" You're cut off from the world!

I can't imagine relying only on NBC and PBS for news... you must have a very "specialized" view of the world...

Rob , I remember when the drive from Phoenix to Flagg, and having hit or miss cell coverage, now its coverage all the way, its not all 3g/4g, but for a large part it is.

Correct English, spelling and punctuation is not a matter of opinion. It's either right or it's not. But if you're saying that some people just don't care to post using correct English, spelling and punctuation, I agree with that. Which was my point... the worst offenders are generally the ones who really don't see any problem with posting in gibberish. They don't care about it, which makes trying to get them to change their ways pointless.

This may not be applicable to many of our members, but if you can get the Internet on your cell phone, you can use it as a modem for your computer using Bluetooth, even if you're traveling in a car with your laptop.

From '94-'09, I worked masonry construction. About once a month we'd pull off a job to build a cell tower "shack". Basically a reinforced brick, block building to house monitoring equipment for the tower. The plan, as I understood it, was to have a tower every 2 miles on a grid to supply cell phone services. Spome of the places these towers were built took a lot of clearing to get to. A lot of people in the private sector benefitted financially for agreeing to have these built on their land. Obviously, it started in large metro areas. Perhaps they haven't made it to less populated areas yet? Every 2 miles? The face of the planet? Delusions of grandeur? It's happening, though ! Hang tight.

We finally got DSL a couple of years ago after getting a petition to ATT. They said there weren't enough people around here to upgrade the lines from dial up. I don't watch much tv so if it wasn't for the internet I'd be completly cut off Harry. Ya know, come to think about it, the way the way the world is, that might not be such a bad thing.

Yeah, I agree with you. Sometimes it's almost better not to know about all the craziness. Better for one's blood pressure! :D

True, but that does cost extra, I know with verizon it was $50 extra a month

......It is pointless to expect them to change their ways. Different dialects have developed within the same society for thousands of years. For the longest time, in America at least. This has translated mostly into accents. With the advent of the internet, cell phones & texting, there is actually a new vernacular developing.

I think this topic keeps on popping up every so often because we basically have two types of members here: those old enough to have grown up without cell phones, the internet and texting, and those young enough to never have known a world without cell phones, the internet and texting.

The older bunch resents the texting style of posting and all the LMFAOs and OMGs and such because they see that as people being "too lazy" to use proper English in their posts, the way they were taught when they grew up.

And the younger bunch doesn't see what the big deal is, because texting and that style of communicating are what they grew up with and seems "normal" to them.

So the two sides will basically never agree. The best we can hope for is that members try to remember that not everyone here is 20 years old, and not everyone here understands text lingo. It's a matter of using a little common sense and a little common courtesy.

That's it, Harry. I have 16 & 10 yr old daughters & I have to keep up with them. I actually used my 1st LOL a while back. OMG, FWIW, IMHO, & such followed shortly thereafter. It still feels inadequate to use them, but I'm trying my best to adjust. Sometimes it feels good to be laughed at!!!!LOLOLOLOL.....That's a new one, guys!

I have two daughters, too. I have to keep up, otherwise I can't understand them!!!

Sometimes that could be blessing  , I cant understand my daughter , but thats because she is 7months old

I am 31, I was 19 when I got my first cell phone, this was the time when cell phones jut became affordable 1997/98/99 , and they were downsized to a more convenient size. I cant stand text speak out side of a text message, even then I still dont like text speak. I do use LOL or HAHA, or the like, but I dont do the numbers with letters trying to make a word, like b4 ,or l8tr.

I still miss my pager though

What the heck is "Spell Check"?

It's amazing that only 50 years ago English, Spelling, Reading, Grammar, Punctuation and Sentence Structure were all taught in school, even Manners.

These subjects at that time were as fundamental as Math and History, not just in school but in all aspects of our daily lives.

It's easy to recognize a simple "tpyo" and although I try my best even my posts sometime contain a mistake or two.

Some Internet posts are a bit more revealing of people.

In today's world of instant gratification, especially on the Internet, there is no thought for taking the time to be precise.

For decades now Schools have been forced to get kids graduated no matter how ill prepared they are for the Real World.

Not long after I first joined here I would tune into that goofy "Lousy Barn Door" thread just to bust my gut laughing at the ridiculous meandering of that Member and to see how completely miswritten and misspelled his unintelligible ramblings would be.

Everything about that person's thread was so incredibly brainless that the extent of it's mistakes were actually compelling to read and laugh at.

It was like a bad car wreck that you could not turn away from, only hilarious.

Now, this is a Model Forum so as long as the info you post outweighs what we have to wade through to read and understand it, then your thread is a Plus.

I have to agree about that barn crude fest of a thread, I still have no idea what it was about, I never bothered trying to read thru it or any other thing posted by that member. And I find it funny, is he has not around since then, or loss I guess  .

The use of proper punctuation and spelling was and still is not my strong point, thank goodness for spell checker :D

Jonathan I'd been a policeman for a year when you were born!

I recall the first time I wrote a report on a word processing program installed on a desk top. We snuck the thing into one of the interview rooms in our bureau. This was used as a report writing room for years before computers became "ordinary". My partner always said he knew when I had been on the computer writing.

He found whiteout all over the screen..........................................

No cell service in your area????? It's 2012... how is that possible? Are you saying that nobody where you live has a cell phone? That's hard to believe.

Harry what you big city folks do not understand is that in some areas of the country. We do not have all the choices you have.We have few and far between cell towers plus hills that block signals. So you can have cell phone but that does not meam it will get a singal..Some people only have one internet service and it may only be dialup or a very poor high speed service. Yes it is 2012 but country folks are left out because of the cost, not enough return on there investment..You can not get cable tv everywhere just satellite tv.For get about buying converter box to get over the air free tv the do not work here the singal is to weak.Welcome to country living it sucks for high teck things.

I have tried to keep my dog out of this fight, but just can't. Sometimes I have to let go of my attitudes towards certain things in this world today. It may not be the way that I would have it, but it is what it is. I can either try to accept it as it is, ignore it, or just continue to be bent-up about it. I can not change anybody or anything. I am the one who needs to make adjustments.
