Do you do anything special to get your bench back in shape and in order?

I tend to clean up maybe twice a year (and normally in the Spring) to get the bench not to look as messy as it does.

I think model builders come in two types: The Felix Ungers (neat) or the Oscar Madisons (messy).

Of course, many of us are some where in the middle too.

Spring is here, the bones and muscles are warming up, it's time to get some more building done.

Full extension of my left arm, rest it on the end of the bench, and walk with a slow, outward swiping motion...

Good call, I need to re organize again today, for some reason all the leftover parts from my recent builds get left on the table, I clean mine up once every couple weeks.

...Let's just say there's a reason I don't toss out my kit boxes.

That, and I have toolboxes, tackleboxes... and I still don't have enough space.

I eventually end up thinning out my scraps and spares. That takes a full afternoon of sitting in the middle of the floor with piles of stuff around me, sorting it all into boxes or the trash box.

...I do this maybe once a month?

Okay I completely cleaned off my desk this afternoon and put all the tools where they belong, all the paint bottles where they belong, and separated the pieces of about 7 different projects into their own dedicated bins. I thought I would be motivated to return to work with a fresh start but instead I'm thinking how nice the desk looks without any stuff on it...

I keep it pretty clean because losing parts in clutter is a royal pain. What I do have to go through is the EXTRA STUFF bin a couple times a year. Any left over parts from kits or my own spares that were pulled from the spare parts drawer but not used, go in the EXTRA STUFF bin. After a while this one gets out of control and the parts need to be separated into their proper drawer.

Hey guys well I cleanup my bench clean after I get my builds done just makes it easier now if I could keep my work bench clean in my garage that would be a bonus.

I'm always buying tools I see that I know I will someday need.

That and the fact that I use so many different items for any project means that no matter if I clean up the shop and put everything back in its place, the very next day it looks just as it did.

Even with tools spread out everywhere I always remember right where I last put something.

I can always tell if someone has walked though and borrowed something for a non modeling chore.

I'm more on the makes Oscar Madison look like Felix Unger end. I've lost a half built Payhauler on my bench before.

That was mostly due to trying to do everything on a small workspace. I'm building my new bench with the idea of stations, a general work area (assembly & hand painting), a scratchbuilding section etc. The general area should be large enough to comfortably fit 3-4 on going projects, and I'm putting shelves below to store the chronically stalled ones to keep them available, but out of the way. Also including an overflow / guest area where I can set things to the side to dry etc or where my wife or son can have a space for their occasional projects.

I'm not a neat and tidy guy by nature, but I'm hoping by laying out the new hobby room in a systematic way it will help at least keep the desk surface visible.

"If a messy shop is a happy shop, then mine is delirious" - I've been sorting, cleaning, organizing for the past three weekends. Just about to get ready for the summer season.

I thought about cleaning my workbench, but I couldn't find it ... so I just built a new one instead.

Great minds do think alike!
