Just started a new build last week, decided to do something a little less polished and rebuild and old model of mine, rat style. I started with a box of partially assembled and badly painted parts, stripped them with easy off and got to work. This is my first time simulating rust and rot, but after reading about different techniques and experimenting a bit I feel I have a pretty good handle on it.

What I started with:

Stripped, dented, and "rusted":

Body was painted with Flat brown, coated with spots of elmers glue and hairsray, then shot with sage green. Rust spots were opened with tooth picks and sandpaper and detailed with drybrushed flat tan and tobacco dust.

Next I have to modify the frame, bed, and interior tub to get it sitting lower.

did you do the chipping by using liquid mask? I like it.

I used a combination of hair spray and Elmers white glue (for the big spots) underneath the topcoat, then chipped away at it. I got the hairspray technique from one of Cranky's videos IIRC.

Craig, delighted to hear you got the technique and got such great results from watching the vids. Thank you. Looking forward to seeing the model done.

Good work on the weathering.

You aren't the only one who has learned something from Dr Cranky! Even after 57 years of building models, I have learn some better ways of doing things from Dr Cranky!

Dr. Cranky taught me everything i know about weathering......ive been his "apprentice" since 2005! LOL i learned alot from ken hamilton, and a few other guys as well......theyre all amazing builders!

we were just talking about it on the phone, and i said ever since i started weathering stuff i have no desire to build "shiney" anymore, not that i dont like shiney, but rusty and crusty is just so much more fun for me. the only shiney builds i have done since 05 or so are ones tht cranky sent me the bodies, and i did the rest....he comes up with some wild paint schemes....

keep the truck goin! looks great!

cheers

Thanks for the kind words, Bryan. Weathering vehicles is the most fun I know how to have in this hobby. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy the heck out of painting shiny! ;)

I love both types of building, it's what's kept me energized all these years.
