Dr. Cranky Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 This brought back lots of memories, and so I want to share it with you all . . . there really is something pure about styrene addiction, no matter your age or skill set . . . enjoy:
Junkman Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 They are wearing shirts with button down collars. I always knew they are a backward bunch.
Dr. Cranky Posted May 13, 2012 Author Posted May 13, 2012 LOL, notice the plug for getting some of us older builders back in the fold. I guess it works. When my grandchildren start arriving I'll be more than happy to turn them on to the hobby, that is if they don't object to all the Lab-RAT-ory messes and equipment.
Dr. Cranky Posted May 13, 2012 Author Posted May 13, 2012 LOL! I can hear them screaming IT'S ALIVE!
LoneWolf15 Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Trouble being , your daughters will be kicking your posterior end for getting their kids all covered with rust , dust , and corruption ! I get yelled at all the time , I just laugh and point towards the laundry room !
Guest Johnny Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 They are wearing shirts with button down collars. I always knew they are a backward bunch. I moved away from button downs in Jr High!!! Moved up to paisley shirts with Nehru Collars!

I get yelled at all the time , I just laugh and point towards the laundry room ! You are so right about that, this is how we end up babying our kids into mid life blubbery. LOLI wonder also if those two kids are real model builders or just actors.
Guest Johnny Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 I wonder if TV time with things like this would help expand the hobby?
Dr. Cranky Posted May 13, 2012 Author Posted May 13, 2012 I wonder if TV time with things like this would help expand the hobby? You mean, if they ran it as a commercial? I would imagine they think the market would be so small (or the demographics) that they would not want to spend them money. Did they ever make tv commercials? I wonder.
Guest Johnny Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 I cannot remember any but then my brain is a little rusty and dusty these days!
Dr. Cranky Posted May 13, 2012 Author Posted May 13, 2012 So is mine! LOL! I know there were always lots of ads in the magazines back in the 50s and 60s.

Revell had a commercial showing a Corvette in a parking garage. The car in the background starts up and backs out of its parking spot and into clear view showing the scale aspect of the model versus the real car. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xs2mq_revell-model-cars-ad-corvette-sting_shortfilms
Dr. Cranky Posted May 13, 2012 Author Posted May 13, 2012 Thanks, Michael, that's very cool and it's a great little lesson in Perspective too.
Guest Johnny Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Yes! Thanks Michael! I have never ever seen that before!
Dr. Cranky Posted May 13, 2012 Author Posted May 13, 2012 I wonder if TAMIYA runs commercials in Japan. I tried looking for some and nothing.
mrmike Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 When I saw this topic, I immediately thought of that commercial from who-knows-when. It would be interesting to see if other model manufacturers had made any TV ads.
Draggon Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 That was neat, but I got confused around the 1:00 mark when the guy says "learn to follow instructions". Models come with instructions?
GrandpaMcGurk Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 That was neat, but I got confused around the 1:00 mark when the guy says "learn to follow instructions". Models come with instructions? Good grief......all along I thought that printed folded paper was just scrap packing material....oh well, no wonder I always have a lot of leftover parts.
martinfan5 Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Now whats wrong with button down collars lol, I thought the instructions where to use as a building mate
Junkman Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 I moved away from button downs in Jr High!!! Moved up to paisley shirts with Nehru Collars! Gosh, you sure must be one of the most dapper chaps on earth! You are a gentleman, and a scholar. BTT I remember that back in the Seventies Revell o G regularily ran adverts on German TV. One that is etched in my memory is one for the 1:8 scale Electra Glide kit. They had a very nicely built model standing on a concrete floor, you thought it is a real Harley. They explained some technical details of a real Harley and played Steppenwolf as background music and then ended it saying something like: But this one is made by us and it's a bit smaller. At the same time someone walked into the picture right next to it, but you could only see his shoes. After seeing this commecial, I pestered my parents to get me one for Christmas, which they did. I was maybe 10 or 12 at the time, so imagine my disappointment when I opened the box and instantly realized that this was way over my top. I also remember the TV ad for the Robert E. Lee Mississippi steamer. This was when I was the age when one reads the Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn stories by Mark Twain. Similar story as with the Harley, I got one for Christmas. And believe it, or not, my father helped me build both of them. And that despite he was a very busy man at the time running his small civil engineering office, regularily putting in 80 hour work weeks to feed the family. The lesson I learned? Well, go figure, Doc Cranky.
Dr. Cranky Posted May 13, 2012 Author Posted May 13, 2012 Great memories, Christian . . . I remember that Mississippi steamer. That thing would make such a great diorama.
Junkman Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Great memories, Christian . . . I remember that Mississippi steamer. That thing would make such a great diorama. Problem is... the Renwal/Lindberg one is so much better.
Dr. Cranky Posted May 13, 2012 Author Posted May 13, 2012 Good to know . . . maybe for some of the parts . . .
