camarofreak82_427 Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 (edited) im starting on my newest derby car which is a 65 chevelle super waggon kit. i wasnt happy with the chassis so i found a different one in my parts box that fits perfect. its an old glue bomb but itll work. im probably going to rough this one up a little since my last one was a pre derby car. im going to see if i can improve on my skills a bit heres my new chassis and my last small block chevy with an auto trans i could dig out, i also found an engine plate. im going to carsons custom model parts to order parts later tonight and i got a boo boo. hahaha Edited July 2, 2012 by camarofreak82_427
rmvw guy Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Watch out for those sharp pointy things! Wagons are always popular at the Derby! I love your play by play! I'll be watching.
camarofreak82_427 Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 Yeah them pointy things! I had to get stitches a couple months ago cuttin myself at work lol. N thank u. I try to be as thurogh as possibe so u guys can keep up to date and catch my mistakes lol
38special Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Using a mopar unibody frame under a gm full frame car?
camarofreak82_427 Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 Lol yeah im goin to make some modifications to it. Its all I had to fit and its better than the chassis it came with. The kit chassis had the exhaust and rear end molded into it and my skill level isnt the best for cutting it all out and scratch building a new one. I think this chassis was actualy from a duster if I remember right
James2 Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Looks like a nice start. Watch out for those knives! I'm 52 yr old and still keep band-aids in reach of the bench.
camarofreak82_427 Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 Lol thats definatly a good idea, thank you
camarofreak82_427 Posted July 8, 2012 Author Posted July 8, 2012 (edited) i have done a little work this week. been kinda off and on and have done alot more reserch to put more detail into it than my last car. i dug out an engine plate from the parts bin and make motor mounts to fit it and glued it on i cut out the fuel tank and took a hood from an s10 and ground it down to fit over the hole then cut a trans tunnel out of an old chassis i had to make it fit. its not perfect but i might weather it and make it look like rust. if u think i should fill it with body filler i am willing to try it just let me know Edited July 8, 2012 by camarofreak82_427
camarofreak82_427 Posted July 8, 2012 Author Posted July 8, 2012 (edited) i cut the interior tub up so u can make the door pannels inner door pannels. i have never cut up this much of a car before so im a little nervous about how its going to look. any comments are welcome thanks for looking Edited July 8, 2012 by camarofreak82_427
502 Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 I you don't have access to plastic sheet, for sale sign works good. It works nice for door panels and any other parts you might scratch build. It is too thin for some parts but it will usually be fine.
camarofreak82_427 Posted July 8, 2012 Author Posted July 8, 2012 i used to have a for sale sign i was using but it got lost in the move and all the ones that i have found seem to be really thin compared to the last stuff i had. when i find the right stuff im gunna have to buy a few sheets now that im trying my had at scratch building lol. thanks for the advice. i saw ur builds in other places and there all awesome.
camarofreak82_427 Posted July 11, 2012 Author Posted July 11, 2012 so i got a little further with the motor. i made a distributor protector and a transmission brace along with the shifter and linkage set up. then i cut into the door pannels. since i am using a mopar chassis and rearend i am converting it into a 77 plymouth furry wagon. it should be an easy conversion. im going to maybe cut the front off of my monico and put it on there. itll be my first conversion i hope it goes good lol
camarofreak82_427 Posted July 15, 2012 Author Posted July 15, 2012 i got a little bit more done since my last post. i did the chassis with some sugar and flat black and a coat of body color. and then rustalled it. its not finnished yet. i still have to do a few more coats of rustall and some blackwashing but i like how its turning out i also got more done on the motor im waiting on headers to put the spark plug wires on. but the cradels finnished and the pullys and fan and carbs on and i got the fuel line ran to the pump. still going to add a few more details to finnish it up once my headers arrive thanks for looking.
jdcar32 Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 Super glue works wonders on Ex-acto cuts, take my word for it !!!!! Looks like your having fun !!!
camarofreak82_427 Posted July 15, 2012 Author Posted July 15, 2012 Lol it wasnt to big of a cut haha. And thank u. I love trying new things out and jus havin fun
camarofreak82_427 Posted July 18, 2012 Author Posted July 18, 2012 well heres some pics. i got the main part of the cage done tonight going to pick up some L shaped styrene tomaro at the hobby store so i can mount the fuel cell to the main cage. i also got a start button and a switch pannel ready to install had some problems with the seat. i dont think i used enough hardener in the bondo its not drying to fast, its only my second time using it. i think im going to try using somthing easier. somthing where i dont have to mix the hardener in lol but heres the pics since ur probably sick of reading lol hopfuly i have this car done by hh3 lol. im tryin to take my time and do things right but i cant wait to see it get done lol
camarofreak82_427 Posted July 25, 2012 Author Posted July 25, 2012 i havnt got to far on this build in the last week or so, still waitin on parts and fixing other stuff and assing little things here and there in my spare time, so far i got the cage all done just waiting for my battery to get here so i can make a box for it and gue it down and wire everything up before the cage goes in. heres my switch box start button and tach, i also got the seat and peddels and firewall in, my break resevore and brake lines started being ran also used some random necklace wire and tied the fuel tank down
Jantrix Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 I really like where you are going with this, but I gotta ask, if you are going through all the trouble of adding weathering and extra detail why would you skip doing the easy stuff like sanding seams (tranny pan) and injection pin marks (timing cover engine support). Weathering and detail are great but it is the clean build that gets the most attention.
camarofreak82_427 Posted July 25, 2012 Author Posted July 25, 2012 Thanks for the compliment. I jus started on filling seams when I did my seat. I never really thought to sand the injection marks off and fill seams on the motor. Thanks for the advice ill definatly keep that in mond next time. This is only my third car since I been back building and putting details into so im still learning lol
camarofreak82_427 Posted July 25, 2012 Author Posted July 25, 2012 thank u. Im converting it into a plymouth furry wagon after a bit of practice with my puddy

You obviously know a great deal about these derby cars and their construction.
camarofreak82_427 Posted July 25, 2012 Author Posted July 25, 2012 I just want to do the best I can and any critisism helps and learn.
