imatt88 Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Hey all, I just picked up Jimmy Flintstone's '68 300 body, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a doner kit for an interior and chassis. Thanks, Cheers, Ian
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 The longest wheelbase Mopar torsion-bar chassis I know of right off hand is the Monogram '70 Superbird. That car had a 116 inch wheelbase, but the Monogram model is 1/24, so if you use it in a 1/25 car, it scales out to about 120 inches. You'd still have to modify the chassis somewhat to get the correct 124 inch wheelbase for the 300. The monogram Superbird can be had for as little as 6 bucks on ebay. Possibly a more accurate donor would be the Lindberg '64 Dodge 330. It is 1/25, and the real car had a wheelbase of 119 inches. You would have to lengthen that chassis also to get it to the correct 124" for the 300. All the Mopars of that era used very similar chassis designs of different lengths, even the pony cars.
imatt88 Posted July 9, 2012 Author Posted July 9, 2012 Bill, OK, thats a start. I still need to come up with a doner for the interior...any suggestions? Thanks, Ian
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 Wouldn't the JoHan '68 Chrysler 300 be the obvious choice for a parts donor? Um, I would kinda think if he had the whole Johan 300 kit, he wouldn't have bought a Flintstone body, maybe. Buying the expensive 300 kit kinda doesn't make sense to use as a donor for a Flintstone repop, does it? Quoting Ian: "OK, thats a start. I still need to come up with a doner for the interior...any suggestions?" Ian, I don't have the Superbird interior to look at (I only have the chassis), but I'd look at that first, or the 330. Easy enough to change the seats.
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 (edited) Steve: "Um, you DO know the Flintstone 300 body is 100% custom , not just a recast of the stock JoHan body right?" Um, no Steve, I didn't know that. Also, I perhaps stupidly assumed he was looking for a donor that would work, cheap. I also assumed he was smart enough to look for an actual 300 donor before he posted, and maybe decided he didn't want to spend that much money. P.S. I DO NOT intend to seem like a smartarr by the way, it just comes out like that sometimes.....so sorry if I ruffled any feathers. Edited July 10, 2012 by Ace-Garageguy
imatt88 Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 Guys, Thanks for the info. Yup, I knew about the Johan 300 kit, but I don't want to spend that kind of money. I was looking for a cheaper alternative I'll play around with the Superbird and see if I can make it work. Cheers, Ian
Casey Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 I would suggest you start with something better detailed than the Monogram Superbird, especially since you'll probably end up modifying it heavily...and still be stuck with that molded-as-one exhaust and rear end. Maybe the 1/25 MPC/AMT '70 SuperBee kit would be a better starting point? It's definitely cheaper and easier to find, and the interior tub is a bit shallower, too.
charlie8575 Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 I believe The Modelhaus has a 1967-'68 300 interior. As to the chassis, I'd use the '64 Dodge or Plymouth and stretch things out as needed. I would recommend stretching the floorpan, as that would be easiest and ensure the the engine/transmission still fit the front subframe. Charlie Larkin
imatt88 Posted July 20, 2012 Author Posted July 20, 2012 Charlie, Modelhaus doesn't have an interior for the 300 in their catalog. I'll keep looking for a doner. I think I'll try the Super Bee suggestion Cheers, Ian
