Olskoolrodder Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 (edited) The model that got me back into building after a decade+ (of not building-except that Revell '06 Mustang GT in '06) was Revell's '49 Merc Kustom kit when first released back in 2008. Unfortunately-though it didn't melt and therefore could probably be REbuilt-it was damaged in the house fire w had last year. I happen to have a couple NIB kits of it though (thanks to model forum friends who so kindly donated them shortly after getting settle dlast fall after the fire) ,so I'm going to build it again, with only a few small changes-but hopefull a bit better this time (not that the other was bad,it brought home a 2nd in the Box Stock class in 2010 at a Hobbytown show,LOL)! Anyways, here are a few pics of the original the day it was finished back in 2008 (I hadn't even got the spotlights or wipers on in these pics,LOL! )... The NIB kit... All's I got done today was to prep and spray the body (Duplicolor "Black" synthetic lacquer from a can),get the decals on,and gloss coat the hood (sorry,no pics of the shiny hood yet),as it was storming pretty bad, hail and lightning/thunder. While I was high and dry in the new workshop, with an uninsulated steel roof,it was pretty loud,LOL! I'm itching to work on this one though-moreso than any build in the last couple years anyways, because it kinda broke my heart to see this/that ne damaged last year. Besides that,it'll be the first complete build in the new workshop Edited August 1, 2012 by Olskoolrodder
Joker Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 That storm missed my place in Chesterfield. Lots of thunder but no rain.
blueoval92 Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 nice man, sorry to here about losing your stuff to fire. i am building the same model right now, mine is painted deep pearlesent purple by model master. keeping it just a plain body, no flames or anything just a nice paint job. Still have to wet sand and clear but will be doing that hopefully sometime tomorrow.
blueoval92 Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Here are a couple of pics of mine, just put the final coat of paint on this morning before i left for work.
Olskoolrodder Posted August 1, 2012 Author Posted August 1, 2012 James-It not only rained, got golf ball sized hail too,LOL! Jonathan-That Merc's looking good, paint looks a mile deep! I have another one of these,I'll build it more like yours,no flames. I was thinking of using that can of Tamiya Mica Blue I have when I get round to it...if I don't use it on a '48 Ford No worries now about losing the stuff in that fire, but thatnks my friend It was a year,a month, and a day ago-funny how much junk one family can aquire in that amount of time,LOL. Lost this lease-purchase house we moved into after that fire this month and had to move too...scam victims (people have no shame),but that's another story,LOL! It's all good, had we stayed there,I'd never have the new workshop, didn't have yard space for it,so I's still happy-go-lucky about it all
blueoval92 Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 thanks, and that goos to hear. Sometime bad things need to happen for better thing to come along. learned that leason a time or two with a couple of engines i rebuilt that ended up blowing up( kind of literally) when i had them ran on a dyno. Ended up finding better engines and more so ones that i wanted in the 1st place
Olskoolrodder Posted August 1, 2012 Author Posted August 1, 2012 LOL,I did similiar back in my motocrossing days to some unsuspecting YZ250's
Olskoolrodder Posted August 22, 2012 Author Posted August 22, 2012 Been dragging my feet a bit, bbut here's some shinier pics...
rmvw guy Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 It looks nice and shiny, I guess the old one is officially a survivor now! Nice work keep it going, and I love the old one too, hope you keep it untouched forever!
Olskoolrodder Posted August 22, 2012 Author Posted August 22, 2012 Thanks,my friend, for the kind words The old one is a semi-survivor (those are 5 year old pics of it,back when first built),there was some damage to it in that house fire last year. MOSTLY cosmetic, atiny bit of warping. I'll have to dig all of it out of boxes where we recently had to pack and move, but they'll eventually be packed and displayed together
blueoval92 Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 looks great man. ever consider glossy for the body and keeping the hood flat? just an idea
W-409 Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Beautiful PaintJob! Very smooth and shiny too, and I've always liked the combination of Gloss Black and chrome, so it's going to look killer when BMF is on.
Olskoolrodder Posted August 25, 2012 Author Posted August 25, 2012 Thanks,guys-MUCH appreciated! I like the idea,Jonathan,a bit too late on this one though maybe next one (I have one more of these,LOL!) I got myself going on something else that will have to take priorety for the next few weeks (though I wilstill piddle on this one,it's close to my heart) as there's a deadline on that build and there are seom cool prises riding on the line,LOL,but this one WILL get done,I promise Here's a teaser of that one (lots more bodywork thanit "looks" like,LOL),it's first mockup (I might won't get this one posted until it's done though...)
Rob Z Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 KOOL lookin' Merc Steve!!! Really looks good all shiny'd up... The '57 looks like it's going to be a fun build also, like the way she's sittin' in the pic... TY
Olskoolrodder Posted December 17, 2012 Author Posted December 17, 2012 Rob,thank you and very sorry I just saw this As some of you who know me know,I've had lots going on keeping me both off the bench and out of the mood to build these last few months (unfortunately, life does that sometimes). I have got this one out and piddled with it a bit over the weekend though
Olskoolrodder Posted December 18, 2012 Author Posted December 18, 2012 (edited) Thanks,Johnny Here's a couple pics as proof it happened,LOL! Edited December 18, 2012 by Olskoolrodder
