blueoval92 Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Well this is my official first custom build. Up until now i have build a model using the supplied directions. For this build i am using the body of a 61 ford galaxie styline reissue by AMT, a 2008 mustang 500KR( for engine and possibly hood) and a 1960 ford starline( for chassis and possible interior. I am thinking about maybe removing the roof at the windsheild line and turning it into a topless with the custom styled front and rear and also modifying the stock style grill to fit into the custom. I realized today when i bought the kit how much body work will need to be done just to attach the custom pieces not to mention the additional mods i want to make. So please be patient with me as i will be taking my time with this build so that i can do as best as i can with my first fully custom build.
Bartster Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 l have the same build (minus the Mustang engine) coming up soon. l will watch with interest to see what you do with this. The '61 has always been one of my favorite Fords.
blueoval92 Posted August 1, 2012 Author Posted August 1, 2012 will keep you posted as i make progress. I ordered the 1960 starline 2 in 1 kit today, still need to make a trip to the hobby shop and purchase the mustang. Hopefully will have all the parts by the middle of next week.
Olskoolrodder Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Sounds killer and uniquely kool,my friend,look forward to watching! We'll learn together,take your time,ths ain't no race,enjoy it
blueoval92 Posted August 2, 2012 Author Posted August 2, 2012 well my 1960 starline is on the way. now to just track down the mustang
blueoval92 Posted August 3, 2012 Author Posted August 3, 2012 found the 2008 mustang. had to literally move and look behind every box on the model isle at hobby lobby to find it but its mine.
blueoval92 Posted August 6, 2012 Author Posted August 6, 2012 two out of three, waiting on the my starliner to get here hopefully sometime this week. for now im gunna start to see how the hood will fit and possible start working on some of the body work. the parts pile is growing, from what i hear that starliner 2-in-1 has a boat load of parts, cant wait to find out. Also can somebody tell me whats the best way to cut and remove parts from a model such as the roof and hood on my styline. I know i could take the time to score the parts until i cut through but want to know if i could use a fine tooth saw like for balsa wood plane models and such.
bryan_m Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 very cool build idea, lots of imagination! keep it goin cheers bryan
blueoval92 Posted August 6, 2012 Author Posted August 6, 2012 thanks. One thing i have been thinking of instead of a modern mustang engine, im looking at putting a detailed aftermarket engine from detail master. http://www.detailmaster.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Session_ID=367e2170e5f0726d19a7d6d97cc7b987&Screen=PROD&Store_Code=detailmaster&Product_Code=RGE-308&Category_Code=RGE http://www.detailmaster.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Session_ID=367e2170e5f0726d19a7d6d97cc7b987&Screen=PROD&Store_Code=detailmaster&Product_Code=RGE-312&Category_Code=RGE http://www.detailmaster.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Session_ID=367e2170e5f0726d19a7d6d97cc7b987&Screen=PROD&Store_Code=detailmaster&Product_Code=RGE-403&Category_Code=RGE http://www.detailmaster.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Session_ID=367e2170e5f0726d19a7d6d97cc7b987&Screen=PROD&Store_Code=detailmaster&Product_Code=RGE-604&Category_Code=RGE what do yall think. the other other motor is cool but these are bitchin', please excuse the phrase lol
zenrat Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 A Ross Gibson Engine is a kit in it's own right but bear in mind the cost - for that you could get a complete kit to rob the engine from. Also, if you are getting the latest issue of the Starliner then it comes with 2 complete engines. You can cut roofs of, and bodywork up, with your hobby knife but i'd be investing in a razor saw if I were you. Either a complete stand alone saw or you can get saw blades which fit into an exacto knife handle. I prefer the stand alone as it has a rigid blade making straight cuts easier.
blueoval92 Posted August 6, 2012 Author Posted August 6, 2012 (edited) i already have the mustang for the engine which is what i originaly planned to use, then i came across those the other day and felt like they fit more of what im goin for. i dont mind the cost just want some other opinions on it because i cant choose which one to put. the mustang engine i feel just isnt detailed enough to fit the look the car will hopefully hopefully have, just depends on how well i can do the body work and lay down the paint and all. as for the saw i think ill look into a stand alone being as i have a decent bit of straight cuts to make, will just have to do a bit of shaving with the hobby knife and some sanding, which would already have to do Edited August 6, 2012 by blueoval92
blueoval92 Posted August 6, 2012 Author Posted August 6, 2012 also how well do dremel tools work for cutting styrene. im pretty good with one but im not sure if it would make too much heat and melt the plastic. has anybody had a problem with that?
Bartster Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 When l did this roof swap l used the back edge of a #11 exacto blade & scored almost all the way through, following the windshield chrome line to the wing window. then cut the wing window through to that cut with the sharp edge. l also used the sharp edge to cut through the C pillar/back window. & yes, a dremel will melt more than cut which wouldn't be good on a cut like this. Some might cut the entire windshield off, which would work as well, but l wanted the option of making a boxtop OR a convertible out of the '61. l'm assuming the back glass from the '61 can be used to cut the new deck lid configuration, but l seem to have misplaced mine. Bart.
Austin T Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 A dremel will melt the plastic that you cut only near the dremel tool though.
SSNJim Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 If you use a Dremel at the highest speed, it will melt the plastic. With a variable speed Dremel set at low speed and a little care, you can do some decent work. I don't know how intricate or fine you can get with it, but it will work pretty well for initial shaping and excess material removal.

Bartster Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 if you cant find yours let me know, would be glad to donate mine and the other glass minus the windsheild and front quaters .......PM sent!
blueoval92 Posted August 7, 2012 Author Posted August 7, 2012 bart its mailed out. i sent you the glass for the 61 and the rear for the 60 starliner. hope you can use them. i got my 1960 starliner in yesterday and man thats alot of pieces lol, gunna start maybe tonight on it, been waiting for everything to get here
Bartster Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 (edited) Thanks a bunch, Jonathan!! l'll let you know when l get it! Lotsa great detailed parts in the '60 kit! l like the '60, but l've always liked the '61 much better. l've been waiting to do this build for a long time & finally got a '61 body thanks to edrothoo! l also found my missing sheet styrene while looking for the '60 glass, so l plan to open the doors & trunk as well. blueoval92 Posted August 8, 2012 Author Posted August 8, 2012 well turns out my grandfather had a whole bunch of x-acto knifes and saws, so i was able to start work on my project finally. so far i have cut and removed the roof and rear pilars. i am about to start glueing and putting body filler on the rear bumper and possibly try and cut open the hood. will post pics later when i get to a good stopping point for the night.
blueoval92 Posted August 8, 2012 Author Posted August 8, 2012 have also decided to open the trunk, plan to carpet the floors and trunk and place a couple NOS tanks back there.
blueoval92 Posted August 8, 2012 Author Posted August 8, 2012 (edited) took a while but i feel pretty good about how my 1st attempt at cutting open a trunk and hood and removing a roof. still have to sand down the edges and shape a few things but not bad. got the front and rear bumpers glued on, once its fully cured i will put some body filler on and start sanding. decided to shave and fill the door handles. the thing im not sure on is how to hinge the deck lid and hood so i can open and close them. im thinking maybe a small metal hinge or something like it, i plan to make a support rod to hold the hood up but dont want to to move out of place. how can i solve this? Edited August 8, 2012 by blueoval92
blueoval92 Posted August 9, 2012 Author Posted August 9, 2012 i got the 1st layer of filler put on, doors hardened good and was able to sand them down, still have to go back and fill the handles in. the front and rear bumpers still have to harden over night, will sand them sometime late morning and start the 2nd layer, have also started on glueing the engine together. will start painting as soon as i can finish my booth. pics to come as soon as i get some more done with the body work.
blueoval92 Posted August 10, 2012 Author Posted August 10, 2012 well i was gonna post pics tonight since i was able to sand down the 1st layer of filler, put on the second layer and started to fit and gap the hood and smoothed down the sections where i cut the rear of the roof. sadly i cut my ring finger at the tip kinda bad and had to stop and may be going get stitches once i can see how bad it is. so pics will have to wait until tomorrow. Its coming along good i think considering this is my 1st of this kind of build. Have also got to thinking about whether or not i should put a NOS bottle setup in the trunk or do a custom audio system with a few subs and amps. would like to leave it up to some kind of vote. will defiantly do NOS if i could find some shrunken stickers like there are on a real NOS tank.
blueoval92 Posted August 12, 2012 Author Posted August 12, 2012 got the filler on, sanded and 2nd layer on. hood and rear deck pegs cut off and sanded smooth with the rest of the panel
