John Pol Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Is there a site that tells you what kit has the best crager rims best posi rearend etc.? I think it would neat that something like that was around so you know what kit to get for those parts to finish your project John Pol
mikemodeler Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Great idea in concept but not certain how one would classify which part is the best? What if a long out of production kit had the best small block Chevy engine but it routinely went for $60 or more on eBay? Would you want to pay that amount just for an engine? I might be willing to accept a lower standard than you and therefore I could say "x-kit" had the best "part" while you may dispute that. Sorta along the lines of a movie or music review. In the end, I think just knowing what extra parts or certain parts that are in each kit helps YOU determine whether or not to purchase that kit or look for parts from it.
my name is nobody Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 the people who actually build modelcars and have access to many kits are the folks to ask about kits and the parts they contain. so I would have to say this place is the best place to obtain that information. All you have to do is ask. The members of this forum will steer you in the right direction.
southpier Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 "best" is highly subjective, but i don't think a kit would affordable if it had the 'best' parts. that's where the aftermarket companies come in first. but to build a model from assembled pieces would quadruple its cost. one or two per model still can make it stand out in the line-up.
torinobradley Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 I think just having a big list of what parts are available in what kits would be invaluable. A list of what engine/engines are included, trans, wheels, hubcaps, custom parts, racing parts and the like would be an awesome tool for all us kit-bashers. Even have a section for notes such as "Very well detailed small block Chevy motor with a powerglide & heads with accurate casting marks on the ends." Would be especially good if you had a searchable database... Would take a lot of work considering how many different kits and different releases of those kits are out there now.

You're talking about a whole site by itself, and several people to compile the data, keep it updated, etc., etc. Not exactly something that can be thrown together in an hour or two.
mikemodeler Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 This would be nice to start with kits that are issued today, but what about the last 60 years of model kits? There are many parts from kits 10,20,30 even 40 years ago that are readily available as those kits have been re-issued and or updated over the years. Add in those old rare kits where some resin casters have taken some of the parts and offered them and you have more information for your data base. Then, you would have to format in such a manner that it could be filtered and sorted in a multitude of ways to appease many different people. The only sensible solution I see is for everyone to buy one each of every kit they run across and then they will have all of the parts they will need!
rmvw guy Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 What parts are you looking for? I would just start a thread under Q&A for the part I need. I started one for Baby Moon hubcaps and had replies in the first 15 minutes. Since you mentioned Cragers, the Meyers "Manx" has a nice reversed set. Forum members will share their vast knowledge with you!
LoneWolf15 Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Cragars ..... AMT kits , ' 37 Chevy , ' 40 Ford sedan , '65 El Camino , ' 49 Ford convertible . Revell ...... ' 68 Dart & Charger , ' 37 Ford Coupe . All you have to do is ask around here . There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of years of modeling knowledge amongst the members on this forum !
Dr. Cranky Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Exactly what Donn says . . . the wealth of information among the folks here is amazing, and if you ask someone will chime in with the right information.
Lunajammer Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 (edited) and if you ask someone will chime in with the right information. ...And the wrong information. There are always a handful of (well intentioned?) folks who are more motivated to tell you how much they know than try to give you a useable answer your question. Yes a searchable, photo database would be a lot of work but any internet database is. Yet there are some amazing sites of obscure subjects that do just that because someone took it upon himself to start. Plan59.com is one and it's a must see. One person alone couldn't do it but with contributions from users and a little time it would at least grow into an ongoing resource, not unlike the Drastic Plastic instruction sheet database. Regardless of differing opinions of good or poor, you could at least use your own judgement if there was a starting place that let you browse as swiftly as your creative thoughts. Dr. Cranky Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Any type of cool content like this is always time consuming, and a labor of love for the person doing it.
zenrat Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 And just to add to the confusion you have the manufacturers habit of changing whiat parts they include when they re-pop kits.
southpier Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 this may be a start: http://www.straightlinemodeler.org/parts/parts.html someone had the energy to do it!
Terry Sumner Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 I was just going to suggest the SLM page. Some of the guys on the SLM are among the best, most knowledgeable people you will find on the subject of drag racing. It was those fellas who put together this limited list of what they consider the best kit parts of those certain drag related items.... http://www.straightlinemodeler.org/parts/parts.html
Junkman Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 (edited) Cragars ..... AMT kits ...' 49 Ford convertible... [anorak mode]A '49 Ford convertible was never made by AMT.[/anorak mode] BTT This would be an epic task. Just to make a list of all model kits is practically impossible, let alone a database of specific components in them. Edited August 28, 2012 by Junkman
