Cant wait to see more on this. What other mods are you planning to do?

Ron

A pair of sunken ariels , cruiser skirts cutom made from Merc kit and johan 1958 Buick, interior combo of Merc kit, ertl 58 Chevy and Ala Cart. Motor is the Ala Cart Dodge Red Ram Hemi with the Caddy Hydromatic. The hood needs work... it seems too flat on top and in front, I may pancake it about 3/32 to 1/8 inch. Also I need to move bottom of trunk down a bit. Last is to do taillights same as headlights. Here is some more pics. Added K&S tubing to rear lights to give me a 1/32 lip, added sunken ariels on right quarter and modified some Johan 'bubble' skirts. Engine is now going to be the Supercharged 57 Ford Fairlane Motor. The Ala Kart hemi looks WAY TOO SMALL!!!! Paul MERCSKIRTS.jpgMERCREAR.jpgMERCANTENAS.jpg

Looking great so far, going for a Barris or Winfield look?

Excellent start Paul! That really has `50s flair to it.

I'm loosely using ideas from Bill Cushenberry's cars and the Alexander brothers with a touch of Sam Barris. Paul

I see a lot of Winfield in it. Looking very sharp so far. I have one open myself and am contemplating an engine change myself. I'm not up to detailing the kit 3 x 2 carb setup, looks like a borderline lost cause. The '57 Ford engine is period correct for what you're going for. Post more progress pictures!

Are you using the new tool Ala Kart hemi? If so, it's waaaaay undersized. If this is the case try the one in the AMT 29 ford kit. You probably know already that the 29 is the old AMT Ala Kart tool, but newer issues still have the hemi. If you know all this already just ignore me.

I looked at that kit too. But since I set a cut off of nothing newer than 1963, the engine in the chassis is the 421 super duty Pontiac with the 4 speed. It is a drop in,with minimal mods to exhaust. Even the oil pan clears. I did remove the battery, but only to clean up the engine compartment. I ended up with the Poncho just because it is period. The Mouse didn't dominate yet! LOL Paul

That front end treatment looks just like a Merc that was built in the old Car Model magazine! It was in May'66. I got the mag. The model was painted metallic blue, but I like your's much better. That candy red looks perfect!! Drool....

Sure, I can take pics of the magazine. But the '59 Impala??? I built a candy blue w. white pearl top '58 with glass roof from the '56 Ford kit. Is that the one you mean? In that case, Thanks!

[Paul,

Looking great so far, man. Love the color. How about a close up of that dash? Did the whitewall tires that came with your kit look O.K.? The ones in my kit looked like that the mold didn't fill-up completely. I found that to be the case in both of the kits that I checked. Anyone reading this, how did your tires look?

About the mystery hubcaps. They are '61 Buick Electra caps. I have a set from Replicas and Miniatures and that's what's on the package.

Thanks,

REX

Back in '66, I renewed my subscription to Car Model just because they did this article. Ever since day one, I have built customs, street rods, street machines and by the late sixties, putty throwers were getting rarer, which I was, and CM was devoted to slot cars, beastie rods, weird-ohs, and other tangential stuff that I could not relate to. I did try to adjust by building funny cars for awhile, but in '70, I took my first hiatus.

That Merc will always live in my heart. I was inspired by this, and took my own Merc and sectioned it using the Rod & Custom 3 part series years before as a guide. I put in quad lights similar to this one, and quad taillights like the Cushenberry '56 Ford. Then I opened the doors and primed it. While waiting for paint, I was hospitalized with a serious health problem and my wife with good intentions to clean the garage for my return, inadvertently threw it and several other projects thinking they were "junky old cars", not like the pretty ones on our display case in the living room.

Now, I just bought a Revell Merc, and the recently re-issued "Rides" verson of the AMT '49 Merc. I am building the Revell model box stock, which is generally what I do when I get a newly tooled model, which I plan to purchase and build severl more. The AMT Merc will be sectioned, not chopped, no skirts, with a flathead motor, with working doors. I did cut out a sunroof in the Revell model to allow people to see the detailing and finishing I did to the cockpit.

Great work, and keep it up. You got talent.

I went the same way in the 60's customs and gassers,MY wife tossed much away in the 80's with good intendions.Of course so did my mom in 1970 when I was asked to help uncle sam. Here are the pics of the dash. The White walls are the kit ones,I just added the Steel wheels from the '58 Impala ,so i can use the mystery caps.LOL Paul dash1.jpgdash2.jpgdash3.jpg
