Mopar - D Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 (edited) Back in 74 I bought a74 GMC Jimmy that had a lot of after market items installed on it. I don't have any pictures of it but I do remember what it looked like so that is what I'm working from and the old GMC brochure. My truck was blue with the wood grain on the sides and a white top. This is the kit that I'm starting with. It's a 77 or 78 so I've started by adding the side trim molding fixing the top to go up to the windshield and remove the door frames. I have also reworked the front grill. Edited February 3, 2013 by Mopar - D
Mopar - D Posted January 5, 2013 Author Posted January 5, 2013 I also picked up the new GMC snow plow truck to use the bumpers and hood to match the 74.
Heavy Chevy Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Sounds great! That grille looks nice already, what did you use on it? Really cool that you're bringing this memory back to life
Mopar - D Posted January 5, 2013 Author Posted January 5, 2013 I just cut the center out of the 78 and added 2 sections with some photo edge gril behind it painted black. I also cut out the GMC painted them red and glued it to the gril. I used a bic black felt pen to fill in the black lines.
Mopar - D Posted January 8, 2013 Author Posted January 8, 2013 Here are a couple up dates I've painted the wheels and the raised letters, also cut down the front brush bar and put BFF to make it chrome. Started working on the interior with some blue flocking on the floor and on the seats for the cloth section. I have a question the kit has 2 bateries one on each side. I don't remember on mine but I do know that I only had one battery but I don't remember what side it was on. Help please what side should the battery be on. Thanks.
kenss Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 LOVE THAT GRILL LOOKS LIKE A GOOD ONE STARTED LIKE TO SEE HOW IT TURNS OUT...
Mopar - D Posted January 12, 2013 Author Posted January 12, 2013 Here are this weeks updates. Worked on the interior with flocking on the floor and to make the seats cloth by using flocking and covering it with flat clear coat. Added fog lights to the brush bar and started work on the engine added spark plug wires and changed out the air cleaner. Also started painting the body. The white mid section will be wood grain and the top will be white. I'm working on how to create the wood grain and would appreachate any ideas on creating the wood grain. The white sections in the interior will also get the wood grain. Thanks
Edsel-Dan Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Decals?? I know the last re-issue of th e65 Lincoln had decal instead of contact paper wood-grain. There is at least one aftermarket that offers different colors of wood-grain decal too. Don't remember the name though
Mopar - D Posted January 13, 2013 Author Posted January 13, 2013 Made some more progress with getting the engine and frame put together with the wheels. I have been testing different ways to create the wood grain and have come up with a black base with Tamiya red brown streaked over it gives a good close repersentation of the GM wood grain. Just have the black base on now will put the red brown after its dry and BMF the trim around it.
Tom Geiger Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Good build so far! I built the Monogram Ramcharger and found that the floorboard was only the interior tub so the model didn't look good from the underside, you could see up in to the doors etc around the tub, and the wheel wells weren't complete. I solved it by building the missing areas off the bottom of the interior tub with Evergreen sheet.
Heavy Chevy Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Looking really nice. I love the carpet floor effect.......don't totally get how you did it but very nice indeed :
Mopar - D Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 Rob, for the floor carpet first paint the area to be covered with a color close to the carpet then I use A brush to put Elmer's glue where I want the carpet to be and then spread the flocking over it very heavy and pat it down just a little after it drys I just brush off the extra. It is a good idea to do all your painting around the carpet area first as the lint from the flocking will get in your paint.
Mopar - D Posted January 16, 2013 Author Posted January 16, 2013 Today's updates with the wood grain and BMF and interior together.
mikemodeler Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 coming along nicely! I wonder if Revell will re-issue this kit at some point? Sure would be nice to have it around again.
Mopar - D Posted January 16, 2013 Author Posted January 16, 2013 With all the different releases they have had of the GMC and Chevy's they could offer a 2 in 1 kit stock or custom build.
Heavy Chevy Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 looking awesome! The wood grain came out nice :
Mopar - D Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 Some work from over the week end. I added some texture on the removable top and painted white. Added clear.cost started installing the tinted back window and sunroof. I remember the big alumun frame on it also painted the tail lights with BMF trim . Still need to touch up some of the BMF trim .
Mopar - D Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 And in the 70's you had to have a CB and antennas
Mopar - D Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 Derick there's another brace that will go under the bar I've done a test fit with it.
Heavy Chevy Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 I'm liking this model a lot! I wish I was alive when everyone had cb radios. I have one in my real life custom van but it doesn't get any use......I turn it on, scroll around but no one is out there anymore I guess. When I lived in Ontario, I got people on it more often. Keep it up, lookin' good!
