Cato Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Who has found the black that is PURE black, no tinge of brown, gray or reds???? I mean mile-deep, pitch black. No pearl or metallic, in either model or general paint (Duplicolor, Krylon, etc). Doesn't matter lacquer or not. What is it?
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 In 1:1, House of Kolor is about the blackest straight black I've seen.
VW Dave Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Do you need a gloss, semigloss, matte or flat black?
Cato Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 Do you need a gloss, semigloss, matte or flat black? I'd like which ever is blackest and can clear or polish as desired. Ultimate goal is wet-look deepest black.
Chas SCR Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Du Pont 1950 Plym black is the true black that has not other hue numbers in the mix.
hvymtl Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Toyota Super Black . Mid ninties color was the blackest i have mixed at work Michael
Chief Joseph Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Wicked Colors Jet Black is very, very black. It dries to a semigloss sheen but can be clearcoated.
Cato Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 Great tips and thanks guys. I'll investigate them.
Monty Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 A friend of mine (member purepmd on this board) built a model of this funny car using Tamiya acrylics. He says Tamiya X1 acrylic black is the deepest black he's used. I laughed when I saw where you wanted to get away from black paint with a tinge of brown. That had to be a Testors reference.
Monty Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 So...it's been a week. How's the investigation going?
Cato Posted April 18, 2013 Author Posted April 18, 2013 I've looked into Wicked Colors Jet Black suggested by The Chief and like it. I'm recovering from eye surgery so progress is slow. Starting the model is still months away and I'm just gathering info and materials slowly.
BKcustoms Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Kustom Shop triple deep black is the purest black I've found.
Cato Posted April 19, 2013 Author Posted April 19, 2013 Kustom Shop triple deep black is the purest black I've found. Is this the one you mean Billy? http://www.tcpglobal.com/Customshop/itemdetail.aspx?itemno=KUS+PSB-8618-4Z I'm guessing it's a catalyzed urethane-am I right? Don't see it in the description.
BKcustoms Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Yep, that's the stuff, It's Urethane just like most automotive paints. I'm not sure on the thinner ratios though since I got it in a pre thinned paint kit.
426hemiman Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Go to an auto paint store and ask for a PPG black that they mix and tell them not to mix anything with it -- just tell them you want the pure black. That would be the blackest I know of. I sell this pure black, but since you're on the east coast, it would probably cost a ridiculous amount to ship a 1 oz. bottle to you.
sportandmiah Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Be careful with duplicolor blacks, as most of them have some sort of metal or flake...not noticible on 1:1 cars but very noticible on small model cars.
Cato Posted April 20, 2013 Author Posted April 20, 2013 I'd go with Chris Rock. YIKES! Glad I didn't say that. BTW Dirty Harry-I'm asking this because I'm not too lazy to paint the black on MY Pocher...
