Miatatom
Should lacquer thinner be used to strip enamel off of plastic? Will it soften the plastic?
Kris Morgan
No, It will soften the plastic.
GeeBee
It will not only soften the plastic, but will melt it, use something like oven cleaner, or even dawn power spray, much safer, and won't damage the plastic
Guest G Holding
Acetone...mixed with 20% water. Dirt cheap, super quick, and safe. STOP...... I know what you are gonna say.....But don't say it...TRY IT! Mix Acetone (I got mine at Ace) with 20% water....To TEST your kit, get a piece of sprue, and SOAK it in your mix.....If you are at 20/80 mix, enamel will fall off in 5 to 10 minutes I tested a resin cab with plastic hood and lower cab section....30 minutes, ALL PAINT and primer gone, ZERO etching...Gramps and Mikey taught me this, and no more Easy off or DOT 3 for me! Found these pix on another forum... Edited April 18, 2013 by G Holding
Quick GMC
what about stripping Zero paints and Tamiya paints. Will the 20% water/acetone work? Lacquer thinner will literally melt the plastic.
Miatatom
Yeah, I just completed a little test and softened up some sprue. Thanks for the responses.
Roncla
I've found Tamiyas' Lacquer Thinner #87077 to be excellent for removing paint without it damaging plastic. Due to the cost of it though i only use it on stubborn paints that cheaper alternatives wont budge. http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=87077
