Kaleb Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Ok this has me in a bind, my skills are not up to par in working with brass to make my own leaf springs, same goes for styrene. My problem is that I do not want the zombie affect on this differential. How would I go about changing this?
Casey Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Monogram Boss 429 kit, eh? Take some styrene tube which is slightly less than the rearend's axle tube diameter, and use it to fill in the back/top side. Once that's superglued in place, get out the baking powder and fill in the center/gear carrier area, using superglue to harden the powder. Only fill until you're close to "full", then use putty to fill the final 1/16", as it sands much easier.
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 It's a Ford 9", so another approach, if you happen to have a nice one in the stash from another kit (like a lot of Nascar race-cars, or the Revell '32 Ford kits) is to remove the diff from the springs and substitute the better one in its place. Measure the width of the springs first, then cut the axle housings flush with the springs on either side. Take a round file and remove the part of the axle housings left in the saddles, leaving a nice half-round for the new axle housing to snuggle into. Glue it back in the same place, making sure to keep the spacing between the springs the same, and keep the pinion angle the same as well. Swap in the driveshaft and you're done.
Guest Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 The way I fix them is measure inside to inside on the springs. Then, cut the rearend out only on the inside of the springs. This leaves the mounting stubs for the wheel backs in their exact position. It also keeps it the exact width. Find the rearend you want. Cut it the measurement you got earlier between the springs. Glue your springs/stubs on your chassis with some Elmers glue. Then just glue the rearend to your springs/stubs and let it dry. It's really easy.
Kaleb Posted May 22, 2013 Author Posted May 22, 2013 The problem is, would be to find a whole rearend. I wanted to use a modern set up, but I do not know what to do to change from leaf springs to shock and spring set up.
Fabrux Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 You will need to use trailing arms and coil springs to get rid of the leaves and keep a solid axle. The Monogram Fox body Mustangs would be a good donor for the right setup. If you want to switch to an independent rear axle, the Revell Cougar/Thunderbird kits would be a good donor.

By changing from leaf to coil or IRS, you are opening up a large can of "more work" Bill's thought of the 32 ford 9" will give you more options, but now reworking the chassis, pan, wheels, brakes.......stick with the leaf springs, you could make some slapper bars for those leaves to give it more to look at.
