Lyle Willits Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 I've started to scan some of the 3000 magazines that I have and put them on Fotki. So far I have early HOT ROD mags. You can save these to your hard drive and resize them for 1/25th interiors or dioramas, etc. Or you can just sit there and look at them and be amazed that you could get a whole magazine for a quarter! I'll be adding Car Craft and Rod & custom, etc. soon. Enjoy. HERE'S THE LINK: http://public.fotki.com/mamaprez/magazine-.../early-hot-rod/
cruz Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Hey Lyle, great idea and the reference is awesome, thanks..............
Jairus Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Could be a fun idea for a build off.... "Build a Hod Rod Mag cover car build off 2008". Or something like that.

Guest roadkill2525 Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Is that the car from the Beach Boys' Little Deuce Coupe album?
camaroman Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 I believe you are right about the album cover!!
Lyle Willits Posted October 18, 2007 Author Posted October 18, 2007 Is that the car from the Beach Boys' Little Deuce Coupe album? Because of that album cover, the car, over the years, has been referred to as "The Little Deuce Coupe". In fact, it has always been named the Silver Saphire and was owned by Clarence Catallo. Although George Barris often takes credit for the car because he chopped the top, the majority of the build was done by the Alexander Brothers. Clarence died many years ago at a young age and his family kept the car. It was fully and perfectly restored about 4 years ago. There's a rumor that the Danbury Mint is doing a 1/24th scale replica of it.
Modelmartin Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Could be a fun idea for a build off.... "Build a Hod Rod Mag cover car build off 2008". Or something like that. A most excellent idea! We did it for a theme at our NNL in Minnesota one year and was a lot of fun. I am in if you do it!
Robert81 Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 (edited) Holy ######!!! you guys both have an astounding collection of "Golden age" car mags. I see so many icons of 60's North Americian car culture. The Hemi Under Glass, Undertaker dragster, Uncertain T, and many more. I am in awe. All I have are some Car mags from the early 80's, plus a lot from the mid 90's on. Edited November 2, 2007 by Robert81
mr moto Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 I have an old issue of Hot Rod or maybe Car Craft (I'll have to check and confirm which) where the Silver Saphire is for sale in the classifieds at the back of the magazine. I think they wanted about $2,900 iirc! Since the family still has the car, I guess nobody was willing to pay that much for it! That was alot more money back in the sixties but it still doesn't sound like much for that car. BTW, speaking of a whole magazine for a quarter (or $0.50), I recently bought the entire 1963 year of Hot Rod for less than $10.00 on Ebay. That's less than a buck an issue and the wealth of legendary goings-on in 1963 is unbelievable. Fabulous reference material!

I have managed to find a few bargains on ebay, but never bin that lucky.
Tom Kren Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 OK GUYS if i want to make these into 1/24-1/25 scale mags what setting would i use or go about doing it. I HAVE A IDEA!
Seattle Mike Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Hey Lyle - what kind of scanner are you using? What is the resolution? I'm going to be going through the hundreds and hundreds of magazines that I have to scan the articles I want. I'm looking at an HP printer/scanner with scanner resolution of 4800 X 4800 - hopefully that will be good enough.

Raul_Perez Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Lyle, Did you know that Danbury Mint is making an exact 1:24th scale model of the car on the cover of the magazine you posted? They call it the "Little Duece Coupe". Per the brochure they sent me, it will be a limited edition for '08 only. It is supposed to be available some time next year.

I heard that rumor a little while ago. I'm going to have to have one. For years, I have been going to build a replica. I've even gathered certain parts. Now I don't have to - I'll just get the Danbury one. Edited November 14, 2007 by Lyle Willits

I can set my resolution up to 19600.
Raul_Perez Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 No problem, Lyle. They sent me the brochure after I bought the limited edition '34 Ford "California Kid" earlier this year. If you're interested, I can scan the "Duece Coupe" brochure and post it, but it should be listed on the www.diecast.org website soon. They're pretty good about posting images from the brochures until they actually review the model. I saw the 1:1 "California Kid" car with all of the movie posters at the Good Guys show in Pleasanton a few months ago. The Danbury model is spot on to the 1:1 car. Raul
