Metalmad Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 On my last two paint jobs I've had a issue with the paint chipping off around any area that has an edge. My painting method I use is from Don Yost painting DVD. I've always used lacquer based paints including the primer & if I paint with the can I've always used Tamiya lacquers and I always clear over the paint and it is lacquer based also. So any ideas on how to address this? I know be more careful while handling the car when mocking up & assembling but I try to be very conscious when handling the painted body but it seems an edge gets the paint chipped off.
martinfan5 Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 How long are waiting before you handle the bodies after they have been painted?
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 I would also make sure you're getting the plastic scuffed / sanded very thoroughly on the edges. Paint or primer won't always adhere well to slick plastic, and though it may not be a problem in the center of a panel, easy chipping on edges like you're experiencing can happen.
Metalmad Posted May 30, 2013 Author Posted May 30, 2013 I usually wait at least a week or more sometimes before I handle the painted body's.
Guest Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 There's not a whole lot you can do to keep lacquer paint from chipping if you happen to drop it on a hard surface. It may be harder and dry faster than enamel, but it chips a lot easier than enamel. I almost gave up on using lacquer paints because it would chip off so easily. Now, I assemble my models on either my cutting mat at the bench or at a table with a towel over it.
