DrewCfromSC Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Ok, so ive looked at some previous posts about this? Im looking for making myself some waterslide type decals for myself and wonder what printer you are using or recomend in the $50-100 range? How about an all in one scanner printer set up for restoring older decals? Any software needed to do so? any free software programs! Thanks in advance for the replies. Drew C
Swamp Dog Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 brought mine at wal-marts (Canon) scanner and printer for around 45$..
The Creative Explorer Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Make sure you buy a back-feeding printer and not a bottomfeeder!!! (not catfish that is ). A bottomfeeder almost folds the paper to route it through the machine, something decal-paper doesn't like. A back-feeder gives the paper less stress on it's fragile coat.
ScaleDale Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Just to clarify: A back feeding printer has the paper in an angled slot behind the print head, a bottom feeding one has the paper tray flat under the machine. It makes the paper do a u-turn which isn't good for your purposes.Dale
Tom Geiger Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Also, check out how many ink cartridges it uses and how much they cost prior to buying any unit. The printer usually comes with short shot cartridges and replacing them often costs more than the printer!
martinfan5 Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 The very important thing is to find the one that can print at the higher DPI/resolution
retroguy Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 I got a hp3520 deskjet all in one,if I'm understanding how my printer works, the printing starts after the "u turn"and shouldn't affect the paper(I think the brand of paper might make difference) I haven't tried printing any decals yet so I can't speak from experience but will give feedback when I do...
DrewCfromSC Posted June 1, 2013 Author Posted June 1, 2013 ok im thinking of buying this one. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PIXMA-MP280-Inkjet-4498B002/dp/B003VQR1SE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1370117235&sr=1-1&keywords=canon+pixma+mp+280 Looks like it is a top recommendation from you guys as well as another model building website. Has the paper tray thing that don't curl it over while printing and that seems desirable for making decals. Anyone own this one here? Drew C.
Eshaver Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 My Kodak scanner/ printer ran about 80.00 at wal worl. As for a great downloadable program to do art work with , try Libre .
MAGNUM4342 Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 I got a hp3520 deskjet all in one,if I'm understanding how my printer works, the printing starts after the "u turn"and shouldn't affect the paper(I think the brand of paper might make difference) I haven't tried printing any decals yet so I can't speak from experience but will give feedback when I do... It doesn't matter if the printing starts before, or after the U-turn, the turn stresses the coating that's already on the paper that gives you a printable decal surface. It can cause cracks in this surface coating rendering the decals useless after they've been printed.
