Jantrix Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 Guys, I'm building my first replica in 20+ years. It will be for a family member. '70 Malibu. I have the AMT Chevelle kit. I have the right wheels. I have the right paint. I have a nice 350 for it, I just need some advice on parts. Valve covers - I need something similar Breathers - breathers look like BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH in most kits, who makes one that's decent looking? Air cleaner - recommendations appreciated. Valve cover t-bolts? Non-SS grill and bumpers? These are my biggest hurdle. Any help would be seriously appreciated.
hvymtl Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 I agree with Plowboy all good advice also for a better chassis grab a 69 442 0lds and use that . Michael
Jantrix Posted June 5, 2013 Author Posted June 5, 2013 Thanks guys. The 69 Nova came with a small block? I didn't know that. After I'm done the model will spend the rest of its life in a plastic case on a shelf. The accuracy if the chassis is not something I will sacrifice another kit for.
Jantrix Posted June 5, 2013 Author Posted June 5, 2013 Update. Turns out I do have a set of valve covers that are perfect. Thanks very much Roger. I'm going to stick with the kit I have. This is a gift and I want to try to be accurate, but I'm not going to dump more money and more time than needed. Steve thanks very much for the advice. I'll throw some primer on it and see how it looks compared tot he pic. More issues. The AMT doesn't come with side mirrors. Any idea where I can get some that resemble the pic. Heading for the parts bin. Lastly he has a non-SS car, so seats, dash are all wrong. I need a head-banging-on-desk emoticon.
Jantrix Posted June 6, 2013 Author Posted June 6, 2013 I can't really tell from the pic if the miror is round or square but I'm thinking square?? Anyway, the Monogram '69 GTO and I think '70 Chevelle have a sqare driver's side mirror. Some of the '68-'72 Vette kits have one too. I don't know of any kits with one for the passenger side too though. Funny thing, the reflections on the side of the car in your pic look about like the way the AMT kit is sculpted on the sides. Yes, I have a drivers side only from the Revell '69 Vette. And concerning the reflections - I thought so too.
Casey Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 The square side-view mirrors can be found in the Revell '69 Camaro kits, at least the driver's side mirror. Headrests became mandatory on January 1, 1969, so try looking in a few pre-'70 GM kits. The '69 Camaro and Nova SS kits' seats both have headrests, so no help there. They do sort of Nova-ish.
Lunajammer Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 I recently cracked open the AMT (MPC) 72 GTO and the seats look pretty close. Headrests are separate add ons.
Jantrix Posted June 6, 2013 Author Posted June 6, 2013 Sorry Roger the real car is not at my disposal sadly. Im building my replica from the photos.
VW Dave Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 I have a partial fret of PE wing bolts I can send you, Rob; I may also have a good pair of mirrors from an AMT '70 Monte Carlo that would do the trick. PM or email me: plasticman1432@gmail.com
cooltoys1 Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 those are older Nova or early Impala buckets with the seat button on the side, the car should have the same style buckets with the button in center back and headrests. Thaats a killer Chevelle, looks good in Burgundy with the cragars. I suggest the Cragar S/S wheels out of the Motion Camaro.
