Could one have gotten the twin scoop hood on a slant 6 1970 Challenger?

Posted

Flat hood = "JH"

Twin Scoop Hood = "JS"

Shaker Hood = "JS"

The Slant was only available in the "JH" (Challenger base model) and "JP" (Challenger S.E.) .

The twin scoop hood was standard on the "JS" (Challenger R/T) , regardless of engine ( 383 Magnum , 340 , 440 Magnum , 440 Six Pack , Hemi) , at least for the 1970 models . Factory 'Shaker' hoods are kind of rare on 1970 models as there was a shortage of them (at least for the Hemi models ; and , yes , the Challenger's Shaker was different from its 'Cuda cousin) .

I'm *fairly* certain that "JH" models , when equipped with the optional 340 and 330hp 383 engines , had the Shaker as an option ("N96") .

Certainly , a customer could add the twin scoop hood post-facto , and I'm sure that some of the 'hip' dealerships would accommodate this request (e.g. , Mr Norms ,Rockville Centre , White Bear , Crosstown , Crestview , et al.)

The Challenger SE had the Code JH29, or JS29 as R/T SE. There was no JP. This was correct for the Barracuda, where there was no "29", but the different car lines were BH (Barracuda), BP (Barracuda Gran Coupe) and BS ('Cuda) with "23" being Hardtop and "27" convertible.

The Power Bulge hood (twin scoop) was available on base Challengers starting at around mid year (Dec./Jan 1970), although it is quite rare. I don't think it was restricted to any engines, so technically even the /6 was probably available with it.

The Challenger 340 had the PB-hood as standard as well. The Challenger 340 basically was an R/T with a smaller engine and without the R/T badging and some other options missing.

The shaker hood had limited availability, as John said. That led to the fact that some Hemi Challengers got through with the black T/A-hood from the factory, if the original buyer wanted a fresh air hood during the time the Shaker was not available.

Shakers might even have been available on some base Challengers, but I'm not aware of any for 1970. In 71 there were several. But AFAIK the least engine must have been the 340, as the shaker base plates were all different for the particular engine because of carburetion and height of the engine. Chrysler probably didn't tool up any parts for a combination of /6 or 318 with the Shaker option. How many would have been sold ? ;)

I'm not aware that the 2 scoop hood was avail as a stand alone option to be added to any model / engine combination.

AFAIK, it was part of the RT option pkg and had to be ordered as such. 340 four barrel cars were the exception, also known as the A66 cars option code pkg

As much as I like and respect the 'ol bulletproof slant six, having one in a Challenger just seems kinda wrong. Looking forward to the build though.

Thanks guys for the help. I have a resin twin scoop hood for AMT's 70 ragtop. I know there is a resin flat hood, but I do not have the funds for it. I think I will do a twin scoop hood, slant 6, with a luggage rack.

Who makes that resin flat hood? I would like to get one for an almost replica build...

You can get the resin flat hood here at Harts parts, email him, I know you can just buy the hood, but I see he has the whole resin pace car conversion. I have gottent parts from him with no issues and good quality.

Here is the main link.

See if this shows you the conversion, was a long cut and paste so not sure it is all there but you can find it through the above link.

If you do not mind a little work, I have a flat hood from another resin vendor that I will not mention here so this post will not be censored or deleted. It took so long to get here I had ordered the Hart hood, recieved it, and then built the model by the time this one arrived. I will trade this one to you for the other hood. PM me your address if you want it. It needs some sanding to be smooth and paintable, but it is a Challenger flat hood.
