Len Woodruff Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 I trying to make the extended nose and headlights done by GM Styling in 1956. What suggestions to do the extensions?
cobraman Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 I did something like that and had good luck using the end of a normal size Sharpie.

Ace-Garageguy Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 Cool project, but is the red car a real SR-2, or someone's 're-creation'? The reason I ask is because the stance looks off to me (too tail-high) and the helmet fairing seems to be a tad too massive compared to period shots of the original. Could be camera angle i suppose, but the lower high-fin car just seems a little more graceful and well-proportioned to me than the red one.

The red car was Bill Mitchel's car which was a little wider (2") and always had the big tail fin and was raced in 57 for Daytona speed trials. The 2 cars you posted are of the 1st SR-2 that was done for Jerry Earl (Harley's son) and had the lower fins initially but got the "big fin" after Mitchell's car debut.
MrObsessive Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 Len, you might want to extend the fenders directly in front of the leading edge of the wheelwells. In fact, a second kit (for just the body) may come in handy here as you can take "slices" (maybe a 1/8" or so) out of the fenders on the spare body, and then use the main body's forward section to graft on to that one. That way you're keeping the original contour of the fenders as you're trying to copy the shape of the fenders per the 1:1. I'm definitely following this one as I've not seen anyone attempt this car before!
MicroNitro Posted July 15, 2013 Posted July 15, 2013 If you want I could turn the headlight covers for you on the cnc lathe.

Mike Kucaba Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 I've had that model on my bench before. I started with the R&D Unique version years ago and just wasn't happy with how it was turning out. I got back on it a few years ago after finally seeing how the trunk opens. FWIW the headlite covers must snap on and of as I have seen many photos of the tall fin car without them. The snout could probably be extended with some plastic bent to shape and blended in.

Thanks Mike. Keeping the fender line is a key element to have a good out come with the project.
