Thanks to all for your interest and for your comments.

Skip, Simón, I used a very simple and quick technique on the steering wheel. I am going to explain it the Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials subforum right now.

Tom, fortunately the kit had no opening doors, so no problems in this respect either.

Peter, I am quite sure that the Revell kit will be the Italeri model shown here. Already 10 or 15 years ago Revell sold most of the Italeri Ferraris under its own label.

Thanks again!

Hello again...

This post enticed me into starting one of my un-built kits... the fairly recent Fuiimi 250 car.... very nice kit indeed....

As per Jurgen's comment I noticed the wheels and tires are pretty wide on this kit....same for Revell maybe????

Then I dug out my two Gunze Sangyo kits... they are essentially identical to each other except for the fact that one is a curbside (no engine) and the other is a full detail kit with engine...both have a very nice photo etch fret included....

Both however, have narrow wheels and tires and use a photo etch set of parts for the spokes....

I am wondering if these wheels and tires are in fact the correct width???? I just assumed that they are...

Also... the tires appear to big and little.... both no name blank wall tires......any ideas?

Regards

That is lovely! In fact, I think one of the most beautiful 250 GTOs of all (and thus one of the most beautiful cars of all) is the silver one with yellow markings in the Mike Zumbrunn "Ferrari Legends" book. your model is a superb recreation! I must go and read your tips about the steering wheel. Bravo!

bestest,

M.

Thanks for your further comments.

Bill, the tyres might become a real problem:

  • The tyre sizes of the GTO were 6.00 x 15 (appr. 155-15) front and 7.50 x 15 (appr. 195-15) rear - that is was nearly all my books say. By today's standards this is amazingly narrow. After reviewing contemporary pictures, however, I am not sure if this was always true for all GTOs because the rear rim offset seems to vary considerably. If you find your kit tyres not entirely in scale after measuring ( I find kit tyre sizes very often more or less incorrect, they seem to be "universal" for more than only one kit) let your eyes decide if they look convincing or not - this is modeling.
  • In my last post four weeks ago I was wrong. Hard to believe, but Revell's release is really a poor old Protar kit. You can see here http://scaniagreifsons-modellbauforum.forenking.com/t2115-ferrari_250_gto.html that its tyres are obviously also too wide.
  • Since Fujimi tyres are mostly much better than Gunze tyres I hope that they are correct. For the case that they are not I have rewiewed my numerous finished and unfinished kits, but I found no tyres that could solve the problem.

If everything fails - fortunately you won't see very much of the tyres when the model stands on the shelf.

Thanks for all further comments.

Bill, yesterday I overlooked one model because it stood on my photo table. Its tyres should fit. It is the Academy Ferrari 250 LM. The 1:1 car had 5.50 x 15 front and 7.00 x 15 rear. The model tyres are only a bit wider than that. They look quite acceptable, the sidewalls are blank. As far as I know the kit is not available for some time, but should be found online.

I hope this will help if necessary.

I keep coming back to your models, they really are outstanding.

Having built this kit, I'm amazed at what you've done with it. The more I look, the more mods and added detail I see, all of it perfectly executed.

The end result is more reminiscent of Gerald Wingrove than Italeri.

Looking forward to more.

Thanks Jurgen:

This makes sense given the tires of the period were really pretty narrow...even the competing Corvettes in 1962 were running on very skinny tires. My Gunze kit tires look good in the box but you are correct...the real proof will be how they look when mounted.... The Gunze cars do have a major plus as they include some very well done photo etch wire wheels.... I am just still in mid build on the Fujimi car... I am enjoying it but it is a bit tough in places..... overall it seems to be coming together well though.

Thanks!!!

Is there any consensus on which of the two currently available kits is the most accurate, Fujimi or Revell of Germany??

This build has inspired me to build one soon!

Thanks,

Joe.

I would like to know the answer to this questions as well. I was looking at getting the Revell one, let me know as well.

Joe, Brandon, I cannot say much about the Fujimi GTO since I don't know it very well. I can only say that all Fujimi kits that I know are good or excellent.

Please be aware that there are two completely different German Revell kits of the GTO:

I am in mid-build on the Fujimi 250 kit.....

It is very nice....but many parts are EXTREMELY delicate......and that may be an understatement....so you need to act accordingly...

Given that I have drilled and pinned several parts that have very small mounting lugs....that has worked well so far....

So far I have found that the fit overall is excellent.....

The posable steering is really well done and with some care works flawlessly.....

I can't vouch for the overall accuracy but see the previous posts about the tires and wheels....they are clearly oversized.....

I will post some photos when I finish but be aware I AM GOING SLOWLY HERE!!!!!!

This is NOT a "shake the box" kit by any stretch....

Bill (Duntov)......yeah yeah I know .... a Corvette sick-o building a Ferrari!!!!!
