Chief Joseph Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 (edited) Here are a couple of 3D-printed tires that I will be putting into production in the near future: Both are 1/24 scale and are original models that I made. The truck tire was made for a Bronco that I want to build and the Gatorback is for a 1985 IROC-Z. I have the IROC's matching wheel done in 3D, but I haven't had it printed. hjracing Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Great to see that you are in the making of off road tires, are those based on the Hummer H2 Revell tires? If so I whant a set!
Casey Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Will they be cast as copies of what we see, or "soild" as you've done with your BFG Raidal T/A tires? What size are the BFG A-T T/As?
mikemodeler Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 When can i place my order???????? Very nice, as usual!
Greg Wann Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 I'm with Kerry here. I almost was able to buy a 3D printer recently. There is a guy named Chris S. in our club who would be capable of operating it. I can say with a big laugh that a roll of toilet paper would be more useful in my hands. Joseph, what printer do you have? I work at Arizona State University. I work there at night as a plumber. There is a lab in a building that has several decent sized enclosed printers and then there are a whole bunch of some kind of single head printer that are built out of plywood. Some kind of GO BOT? Must be an entry level tabletop version for student use. Of course it is a really big room full of work tables for students. It's pretty cool to see all the little things setting around that has been made. Some of the edges are rough though where you can see the layers being built up. I have seen the Jay Leno video where a crescent wrench is scanned and copied. Once the wrench was completed the thumb wheel operated and the jaws opened and closed. The scan must be a sort of Xray. Otherwise how would the printer know it is a operational tool? Otherwise, wouldn't it just be a shaped blob of plastic? This whole thing just amazes me. Now I see printers that are spraying stainless steel too. Maybe soon there will be a cabinet big enough to print a Triumph TR 4 or an old army Jeep and I can just drive it out of the box.
Kennyboy Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 We are getting ever closer to the Star Trek replicators Nice work on the tires Joseph!!

Here is a link you will like. Here is a guy who has been 3D printing a life sized Aston Martin DB4 in his garage. This guy is awesome.
raildogg Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 (edited) I am in the process of trying to get some wheel rims printed and I keep picking the wrong materials. What are your minimum wall thicknesses? I'm also going to try my hand at having tires printed. PM Me so we can have a dialog about this, if that's o.k. with you Edited September 18, 2013 by raildogg
Eshaver Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 I want a 3-D printer to make me a coffee, Black , hot .
Chief Joseph Posted September 18, 2013 Author Posted September 18, 2013 Thanks for the feedback. First off, I don't have a 3D printer. I really wish I had a B9Creator, but it's not feasible right now. These were printed by PCS Engineering in Maryland. I use Shapeways, too. José, both these tires are original models I made from measurements of the real 1:1 items; they are not based on any kit tire. The truck tire is designed to fit nominally-sized 1/24 15" wheels that are found in many kits-- they fit the wheels in the Monogram F-250 kit perfectly, for example. Casey, the truck tire is sized to 30x10.5x15 in 1/24 scale. That was the optional largest size tire for my full-size Bronco, and it was a common size for full-size trucks back in the '80's and early '90's. I had them printed hollow to save cost, but the cast pieces will be solid like my other tires. These will probably only be cast in soft rubber, and not the hard white resin. Raildogg, I'll send you a PM. Regards, Joseph
Guest Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 You do know that you're going to be swamped with orders on those BFG's don't you? When will they be available?

I'm sure that if you can making those in 33-35 scale inch, there is a bunch of modelers that will whant alot of then...
Erik Smith Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Wow. Joseph comes through on another shortfall of the hobby industry. That BFG looks awesome - I ran a set of 31 inch on my 1984 Toyota.
jeffs396 Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 NICE!!! I'll be waiting for these to be in rubber Joseph! Keep us posted
mikemodeler Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 NICE!!! I'll be waiting for these to be in rubber Joseph! Keep us posted Those BFG All Terrains would look GREAT on a CJ-8 Scrambler.......
shucky Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Very nice Chief! Always impressed with what your coming up with and your use of this new(er) tech. Outstanding work.
1972coronet Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 (edited) Chief Joseph - Your work never ceases to amaze me , and these new tyres are no exception . I must inquire , however , about the sidewall detail of the Eagle VR50 ; weren't those letters recessed on the "1:1" version ? I'm definitely not bringing this up as to bust your chops , especially in a public forum . Matter of fact , I hope that I am wrong . Now , how about some Good Year Wingfoot replicas ? They were popular in the late 70's ; their sidewall markings were really cool , too . Keep up the grear work , bradah Edited September 19, 2013 by 1972coronet

Keep up the grear work , bradah Yes, the lettering is recessed and inverted on the original Gatorback tire that came on the 84 Corvette, but later versions of the tire had the "serrated black letter" style. I patterned this tire after the 245/60R-16 that was found on the mid-80's IROC, WS6, and GNX. Thanks, Joseph I have a "Wingfoot HP" lettering set in my white letter waterslide decal line; is that the same one you are referring to?
Chief Joseph Posted September 21, 2013 Author Posted September 21, 2013 And here's a casting of the truck tire:
hjracing Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 And here's a casting of the truck tire: Those tires look reali terrific! I like it so much!
The70judgeman Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Dang...I missed this thread. Those tires look fantastic! Especially the BFG's.
Erik Smith Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Man, those do look nice. I might have to start building trucks.
