johnbuzzed Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Does anybody else think it would be cool if a decal manufacturer (e.g., Gofer Racing) were to make pro sports team logo decals? Maybe on a sheet with some of those oval state abbreviation stickers, too?
Scale-Master Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Good points Carl. Also, how would you know what size to make the images?
johnbuzzed Posted October 25, 2013 Author Posted October 25, 2013 What size to make the images... I guess the best way would be to find an original image and scale that down to 1/25 or 1/24. At least, that's what I would do. I realize that licensing fees and all the other bureaucratic red tape would most likely make the endeavor cost-prohibitive, but, hey, I still think it would be cool. And I guess with the technology that we have available, such decals could be generated on one's own home PC. But it would still be cool to have a sheet or two or three available.
Erik Smith Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Maybe, but I would think licensing fees would be extremely prohibitive. Plus, if you want to do something like that with NFL teams, you can't just pick and choose the teams you want to do. You have to do ALL of them because of the league's revenue-sharing policy. I agree here. Licensing would be sky high.

At least, that's what I would do. As what, bumper stickers? If there is no counterpart on a real car, I don't see how anyone would know what is a good size to "scale" it to for use on a model car.
johnbuzzed Posted October 28, 2013 Author Posted October 28, 2013 Well, I guess you've never seen the NY Yankees "NY" logo on a rear window, or a Steelers logo, or the Dallas Cowboys star, or the Red Sox logo, et al. Some are rather large, some are small. Then, there are a gazillion college teams, too. I've seen logos on windows, sheet metal, bumpers, license plate frames... some are stickers, some are magnetic or maybe a clingy vinyl, some are bumper stickers... It would be no different to scale them down than it would be to scale down any other decals used in our hobby.
Scale-Master Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 OK, that makes sense. Not so sure the cost of licensing could be overcome to make them affordable enough to market though. Unless maybe you sold them to nail salons...

Chuck Most Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 OK, that makes sense. Not so sure the cost of licensing could be overcome to make them affordable enough to market though. Unless maybe you sold them to nail salons... Hey- I'm not sure if you were speaking in jest in that last sentence, but that actually doesn't sound like a bad idea at all. There are a lot of women out there who like to decorate their nails, and a lot of them are football fans. Just pitch the idea as a manicure product, and if a few modelers buy them for their own purposes too, so much the better.
Erik Smith Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I think licensing for college teams is worse than then the pros. They make millions of dollars on that stuff and they do it by charging people a lot to use the logos. I don't think the hobby market would be able to overcome those fees.
Scale-Master Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 I was 100% serious about the nail salon idea. I did some for that purpose many years ago.
Harry P. Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 The chances of commercially manufactured sports team logo decals for model cars are slim to none. But you're always free to make your own...
Chuck Most Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 The chances of commercially manufactured sports team logo decals for model cars are slim to none. UNLESS..., as Mr. Jones pointed out, you pitched them to nail salons, and then maybe got the word out that they might also be useful for model cars. Emery boards were never marketed to modelers, but how many of us have used them at some point in our modeling careers? Heck, neither was nail polish, but several paint their models with the stuff. Just occurred to me... that's two products modelers have 'borrowed' from the nail salon people... what's one more?
Harry P. Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Nail salons aren't manufacturers, though. Even if they thought it was a good idea, they wouldn't be the ones to manufacture them. It would have to be a Revlon or Sally Hansen or someone like that... a beauty/personal product manufacturer. Edit: it's already being done: http://fashionista.com/2013/09/covergirl-teams-up-with-nfl-on-fanicure-nail-polish-sets/
Casey Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Does anybody else think it would be cool if a decal manufacturer (e.g., Gofer Racing) were to make pro sports team logo decals? Yes.
Harry P. Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Yes. There's a very limited use for those. First, you have to buy the kit to get the decals. Second, they are made to fit a model van.
sjordan2 Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 The chances of commercially manufactured sports team logo decals for model cars are slim to none. But you're always free to make your own... Exactly. I've had to jump through hoops many times in producing advertising related to the Tennessee Vols for my ad agency and clients. Once, they even sent us a cease-and-desist on some Vols footage in a TV spot, but fortunately I had a letter from their prior marketing director authorizing its use. All team logos and ID (even saying UT, The University of Tennessee, Vols, etc in copy) are closely monitored by teams and their sports marketing reps. You've gotta pay to play.
Chuck Most Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Nail salons aren't manufacturers, though. Well, yeah? I'm saying some manufacturer produces them, and then MARKETS them to the nail salons. Which it appears is being done.
