I emailed Jameston, but I was wondering if anyone here can offer feedback. I love Tamiya primer, but I am hoping to go to an airbrush exclusively. It's nearly impossible for me to paint outside because of where I live (desert, constand wind, etc). I have never used an airbrush primer and was just wondering if it is comparible to Tamiya. How fast does it take to dry vs. Tamiya? That's the one thing I love about this stuff, it dries so fast, I can usually sand it in 30-60 minutes.

Mr Surfacer 1200 or 1500 is supposed to be pretty good stuff and from what I understand it doesn't take very long to dry either. Plus it flows pretty smooth out of the airbrush. Only thin it with Mr. leveling thinner or Mr. Color thinner. Don't use cheap lacquer thinners. Only for clean-up.

I'll second Mr Surfacer, but I cut it with cheap lacquer thinner, always more thinner than Surfacer, probably about 2:1. Too little thinner and it'll make cobwebs. Stuff goes on so smooth it has a little shine and it dries just as quick as Tamiya, if not quicker. I've only used 1000, but I'll try some 1200 next time I need some. 1000 is plenty smooth for me, I can't imagine 1200 or 1500 being that much smoother.

Give it a shot and see what happens. You'll be pleasantly surprised. Stuff flows like silk.

I have had very positive results with the Scalefinishes primer, I have used the gray, and would rate it better than Plasticote. Although Plasticote, and Duplicolor are more plentiful in my area. I don't remember what Jameston sells the primer for. You could consider ordering paints, and asking for a small sample. He may be open to that. I am lucky in the fact, that Jameston sells at modeling contests here in the Valley, so I get to deal directly with him, and the paints are excellent.

He offered a sample. I ordered a small bottle anyway, as well as a few paint colors. It's $15 for 4 oz, which will probably go a lot longer than an $11 can of Tamiya primer. Less waste with the airbrush and if it is similar, I don't mind paying a bit more for the convenience. If this doesn't work out I will try the Mr Surfacer

thanks for your feedback.

I have used this a few times now. Seems like it doesn't cover very well unless you really lay it on. It also has cracked on me, probably because I did too heavy of a coat. It doesn't seem to dry as smooth as Tamiya primer, but also probably because I did heavy coats (an it seems to shrink a little bit). I'm getting the hang of it, but I need more practice. It seems extremely hard too. I had a lot of trouble cleaning the airbrush pieces after it dried overnight. I would definitely recommend it though, I know it will be great once I figure out how to adjust my application.

I have can of the 1500, oh wow, that stuff is as smooth as a babys rear end, try, I am pretty sure you will like it , I have not yet tired it through the Air Brush yet, but one of the LHS stocks Mr Hobby products and do have Mr Surfacer in the bottles, I am going to have pick one up and give it a try

What PSI do you shoot it at?

I usually spray mine at around 30 psi. Broad coverage and decent pressure gives a good smooth coat.
