Q tip Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 thanks, the decals were still wet with solvaset when I took the pic, just a tad bit wrinkly yet
olsbooks Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) This immediately popped to mind from "back in the day" as soon as I saw your decals. I like the blue base on yours. I would (sadly) not have dared try blue as the primary color. Shows what I know as this really looks good and is not so "loud" and screaming for a driver wearing polyester plaids, half undone silk shirt and bell bottoms. Ahhh the good old days. Turning out very nice John. Edited January 22, 2014 by olsbooks
Q tip Posted January 23, 2014 Author Posted January 23, 2014 that's where I highjacked them from, truck manf. been using each others designs all along (most popular designs)so I went for it. hey, don't for get the snap button ,flower stitched cowboy shirt,oh almost forgot....the big feathered cowboy hat band..now where did I put that dang gumm mel tillis eight track tape???????
olsbooks Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 (edited) I'm gonna have nightmares....click click....click click...... Edited January 23, 2014 by olsbooks
Q tip Posted January 23, 2014 Author Posted January 23, 2014 With the decals set,its time to start on the down hill side. Wheels and tires on,fenders mocked into position as well as one of the tanks.the visor ,if you notice has got pins sticking out from the sides,I done this to hold it in one place while the glue dries.nothing worse than parts sliding over your finish.
Old Buckaroo Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Very nice - and that paint ring around the front wheel is really sharp !
Q tip Posted January 30, 2014 Author Posted January 30, 2014 Haven't posted anything for a while due to building block. Well here's what I came up with, the motor for this was kind of blah , so out it came, and this is what I came up with..a straight eight, twin turbo Cummins! Thought it would be kind of cool, how to run exsaust and air? Don't know yet,but i'm on a mission.
Q tip Posted January 30, 2014 Author Posted January 30, 2014 thanks, just had to do something differnt
Q tip Posted January 31, 2014 Author Posted January 31, 2014 Done some work to the motor, would it be functional in real life? Don't know, but it looks good! Your input is always welcome....
olsbooks Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 (edited) Now granted and inline 8 cylinder NTC Cummins may never have existed so you certainly have all the artistic license that goes with it. But if you are concerned at all with theory of operation, the fresh air in and exhaust out needs a bit of tweaking. Again, THIS IS NOT MEANT AS NIT PICKING! Heck, I may put a hamster wheel in one of mine one day and savor saying "its mine and I like it regardless of what you think! So, with all these disclaimers, I commence rant. Turbo's are not placed in full series like you have due to theory of operation Far more common is to have them placed in parallel (totally isolated) or series parallel as on the NTC475 twin turbo or some new Tier 4 emission engines.. . Below is picture of the twin turbo NTC 475 (a horrible engine for reliability) and a CAT and how they did it with two stage. (series parallel) Note the routing and difference in turbo sizes. And granted it is a gasser, but this Buick 3.8V6 gives a good view of what I am talking about in terms of splitting the systems and (almost) true parallel though it does share the intake. (cant go as easy by old Detroits due to two stroke operation and the requirement of a blower and their tangled piping) I would suggest just modifying the intake and exhaust manifolds into 4 cylinders and have a dedicated intake and exhaust run for each set of 4 cylinders...if it were mine (and I fully understand it is NOT) and I certainly do not have the skill to fab the manifolds for such a beast. Sorry to go off. Spent too many years as a field engineer and instructor on these things. End rant and unsolicited school lesson. . Heck of a project John. I really like this one! Take care. Q tip Posted January 31, 2014 Author Posted January 31, 2014 thanks for the input, until you pointed that out and I looked at the pics again, your absolutely right. the exsaust sides of the turbo would be pushing against each other therefore cancelling each other out, or in other terms giving the driver an exam via through the floorboard with a cylinder head if you catch my drift. back to carving board!
Old Buckaroo Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 John - this is such a cool build you are doing . Awesome engine you have built. Somewhere I have a pic of my tool box being shadowed by a 16 cylinder I was working on. Lots of great ideas has come from this thread. I broke out the same kit last night and took the Razor saw to it as I am backdating to a 1968.
Q tip Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 i'm glad to see and read the support of this project because it's driving me crazy! just came upstairs from my bunker after splitting the manifolds (made up two new ones). now I'm going to set back with a cup of coffee and plan out the wrap around exsaust from #1 turbo to the left stack......thanks guys! john
olsbooks Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 (edited) nice Edited February 1, 2014 by olsbooks
Jim Whalen Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Hi, This turning into one cool Freightshaker!
Q tip Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 thanks, like jesse was saying, this motor never exsisted so i'm flying by the seat of my pants on the intake, exsaust and all around setup of this. tell you what ,you really test your trail and error patients doing this,so i'm greatful for the extra input.........john
Mr mopar Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Hey John looks real good..................are the decal strips from round2 pete cabover?
Q tip Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 Just a small update, split the manifolds and staggered the turbos for clearance.mocked up air and exsaust, believe it or not, installed interior bucket and cab still functions as normal.
Q tip Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 yep, stripes are from the pete kit, had to cut them to fit and used a ton of solvaset
olsbooks Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 (edited) Trying to put ten pounds of garbage in a 5 pound box, no? Or, as a student of mine once called it, "like worms in love" with all the piping. Curious to see if you do two aftercoolers or just merge them into one big one. In theory, either would work. Just asking....is the cab going to clear (especially on the lower right side rear of the sleeper) the "rear" turbo? Well done! Lots of fun watching this one morphing into a masterpiece John.! Gonna have to take some more genius pills to catch up with you on this one. Edited February 1, 2014 by olsbooks
