I would use a piece of craft foam, and "stamp" the paint on the raised portion of lettering. Use of a liquid masking agent in this type of painting, may be prudent as well. I purchased a product called Mold Builder. It is a latex rubber product, that when dries, can be peeled like a skin, off the area.

On this one the letters were inset. I painted them with acrylic white and just wiped off any paint that went outside the lines. Of course I wanted mine worn, but it would work the same on a shiny truck.

An option I've been wanting to try is to paint the letter colour first, then paint the body colour, and sand off until the letter colour shows. Cover with clear and it should look pretty good!

Sounds like a pretty nifty idea.

I wonder if they make the vinyl lettering that you can get at various places small enough? Probably wouldn't turn out to be the right font though...
