James2 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I have a slightly warped hood. (77 F250) After heating and straightening, it returns to the warped shape when cooled off. I have tried to straighten several times with the same result each time. I am now concerned about damaging it. Any ideas?
disabled modeler Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Sometimes you have to take it passed straight or warped the opposite way then let cool and release to see if it worked...trial and error method here...good luck.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 (edited) To permanently change the shape of something made from a polymer like polystyrene or 'resin', you have to take it past its "glass transition temperature", or Tg. It is somewhere around 100C to 107C depending on the molecular weight of the particular plastic. The values of Tg are different for resin. If you DON'T get it hotter than its Tg, it will ALWAYS spring back to the warped condition as it cools. Edited January 16, 2014 by Ace-Garageguy
64SS350 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I'm not sure what method you used, I used a Corian block and masked the body down, as Mark said above, over straighten the area, and a hair dryer on high. It took a couple times, as he also said, trial and hopefully no error
