Edsel-Dan Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Hi all. I dug out a Pro-Finish Revell 63 Impala hardtop that I want to build with the ruby red metalic paint left intact on the body, but they have printed, or painted pin-stripes over top the red. (This Was a Lowrider after all) I have tried 91% Isopropol Alcohol, Turtle Wax, and a couple other ideas, but Nothing works. Too bad All graphics weren't vinyl stickers like the murals were!! Is there a way to do what I want? or do I need to start with a Bare body??? I have the Stock hubcaps & tires from an AMT 63 SS. I just liked the Red Metallic paint on the kit. (Plus, It was a Cheap clearance buy back when I bought it)
Skip Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Try brake fluid on a Q-Tip, lightly rub the stripes. With the Q-Tip just dampened with the brake fluid. If the brake fluid stays on the paint it will soften the paint. You might try Purple Power on a Q-Tip too, it might work too.
Edsel-Dan Posted January 26, 2014 Author Posted January 26, 2014 Thanks I will have to get some to try! I hoped the Alcohol would work I saw red on the Q-tip! No or LITTLE effect on the pin-stripes though!! I was beginning to wonder if I was going to get a reply
randx0 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 If the brake fluid doesn't work maybe try a polishing kit but try taking the printed stripes off with 600 or 1000 grit first then the regular polishing process 1200,2400,4000,6000,8000,12000 . worth a shot .
Edsel-Dan Posted January 26, 2014 Author Posted January 26, 2014 IF I go that direction (sandpaper/polishing cloths) I would start with 1200 sand paper. 600 would take the Red Off that I want to save!!!!
Art Anderson Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 It seems to me that just the regular polishing compound should remove the striping, without seriously affecting the underlying paint! On diecasts, of course the base color is baked enamel, and the pad printing is done with a type of ink, but of course on a plastic body, baking the basic colors cannot be done, for obvious reasons. Anything that will dissolve the pad printing on a project like this will probably damage the original finish on that body. Art
Edsel-Dan Posted January 27, 2014 Author Posted January 27, 2014 That is what I am Afraid of!!!! I Love that Red Metallic, But, want to build her as a Stock Chevy, not the Lowrider the kit came as. This was the First issue of Revell's 63 Impala!! Naturally, later they re-issued it as a 2n1 With the Stock parts!!!!!
