JabMan Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I don't have a dehydrator, but what I do have is a rack that fits into my dryer to keep things stationary. Do you all think this would work for drying paint?
Erik Smith Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 (edited) No Not very well anyhow...all that motion plus lint and dust plus high heat plus... Edited February 1, 2014 by Erik Smith
Brett Barrow Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Never done it, but I've heard of putting them in the dishwasher on the dry cycle. Also heard of putting them in a gas oven with just the heat from the pilot light. Never tried either, since I have a dehydrator. Buy a dehydrator.
randx0 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I'd try patience before putting something in the dryer or oven .
JohnU Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I built a plywood box a little bigger than 2 1/2 feet square, lined it with foil and mounted a ceramic light fixture with a 60 watt standard bulb, hinged a lid and put a cheapo outdoor thermometer in it. Temperature gets to about 96 degrees and dries enamel paint in about two days. Oh yea, drilled a couple of small holes in the back near the top to vent fumes.
JabMan Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 No Not very well anyhow...all that motion plus lint and dust plus high heat plus... Never thought about the lint. Well I think i will stick with patience as that is what I have always done.
randx0 Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Not sure what kind of paint you are using but I am assuming enamel because that stuff takes a long time to dry . I use lacquer based paint it doesn't take long to dry at all .
ERIK88 Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 I would I bet in a dehydrator , look for used ones on Craigslist . It will cut down on the headache and will protect the model from dust. Buy one with a temp setting, 115 f Max to avoid warpage
jeffbrad Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Aldi stores usually have dehydrators in their special buy sections around this time of year. Last year they were 19.99. Work great
vypurr59 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Thrift Stores, second hand stores, Salvation Army stores. You can find them there if you look around. Bought one for $5 at a thrift store.
ERIK88 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 (edited) bought my nesco dehydrator for $20 from a guy on craigslist / came with extra trays and it was the tempcontrol one Edited February 4, 2014 by ERIK88
Dave Ambrose Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I put an automotive droplight (turned on) into a cardboard box with the model. Does a pretty good job and doesn't cost me anything. It's a good idea to wipe out the inside of the box with a damp cloth. Then it will keep dust of the model too.
Pete J. Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Ronco food dehydrator, $35 plus shipping from amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Ronco-FD1005WHGEN-5-Tray-Electric-Dehydrator/dp/B000G20TCQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391482404&sr=8-1&keywords=ronco+5+tray+food+dehydrator Heck, I'll bet you spent more than that on the kit you are working on. I've had one for 20 years. Works great, easy to figure out. What more could you want?
