sjordan2 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Boeing has introduced a technology that makes it possible to shut down and make unusable any cell phone that has been stolen. Of course, any technology that is ever introduced can be copied. This means that terrorist groups could shut down all of the phones in the world.

Highly motivated and sophisticated hackers could do a pretty good job anyway. No system yet devised is 100% secure. Frankly, I'm surprised we haven't seen well organized and widespread cyber attacks more often, so far. Perhaps that's a testament to the actual technical capabilities of the bad guys.
charlie8575 Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 One more reason I refuse to not have a home phone. I remember in 2011 that we had the "Halloween storm," with several inches of snow and a fair amount of ice. And no power for two or three days. All around my area for one or two days, no mobile phones would work because the mobile towers are powered by regular electric lines, no backups. Our regular phone, though, worked just fine. Ace-Garageguy Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 (edited) Yup, and a battery-powered CB is another good, low-cost (no monthly fee) though seldom used, emergency backup. Edited March 7, 2014 by Ace-Garageguy
