Raul_Perez Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 This is my Revell '49 Merc done in a Mustang Cobra SVT theme. The interior, engine, wheels and mirrors came from the AMT 1997 SVT Mustang Cobra kit. Looking at the finished photos, I still feel that this one could have been painted 2 tone, probably a dark-gray metallic or black top section to compliment the Plum Crazy bottom... Since I really couldn't get good pictures of the interior now that the model is complete, here are a couple of interior shots that were taken earlier. There were very few body mods done to this model. In the front I added the roll pan from the AMT 49 Merc. You can also see the Mustang mirrors and wheels. Again, very minor body mods in the rear. The rear pan was slightly reshaped to align better with the body lines coming down the side. The roll pan was also rounded a bit on the bottom and the exhaust openings were enlarged slightly for the slightly larger exhaust tips that I wanted to use. Here you can see the Cobra SVT engine and all of the necessary "bits" shoehorned into the engine bay. The battery had to be moved next to the firewall to make room for the large heads on the 32 valve 4.6L engine. Everything underneath is built right from the kit except for the headers from the Mustang, a handmade idler arm, (that should have been included in the kit), and the slightly larger exhaust tips. I hope you enjoy looking at this one as much as I did building it.
outlaw035 Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 hey raul that is 1 sweet merc...the mustang theme goes grt8 with it....the interior is outstanding...wish i had just a little of ur design knowledge...would never think to do this....but maybe it will rub off on me someday....neal
dub Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 It turned out great! The wheels look better from the rear 3/4 view. Much meatier! Now its easy to see the size difference. Man that lump is squeezed in there. Does look at home though... I can feel the two tone thoughts too. If you would have used silver it would have been Rolls Royce classy. That's OK, its meaner this way!

There's really not much to it. I either use the original parts as templates for the new ones, or in this case, graft the new parts onto the stock ones. For this build, the Mustang dash was grafted right onto the Merc dash. Doing that maintains the fit around the windshield. The door panels were then cut down and grafted onto the Merc door panels to fit the dash, again to maintain the fit of the original parts. The only real work in the interior was removing the Merc's rear seat and replacing it with the one from the Mustang. I made a filler panel that held the original rear window package shelf in place to maintain the fit with the rear window while I removed the old seat and put in the new one. Since the filler panel was in the closed trunk, glued between the floor pan and the bottom-side of the package tray, it was never removed after the new seat was fitted in place. A little super glue and bada-bing, bada-boom, it was done... So, go ahead, give it a try. Afterall, my good friend Curt Raitz once told me that "model building is nothing more than a series of fixing your mistakes as you go". If it doesn't come out the way that you wanted it the first time, tweak it a bit until you're happy with it. Good luck and keep on trying,

That's OK, its meaner this way! Thanks, Jonathan!! I agree that a 2 tone paint job might make it look too "classy" and stripes just don't seem to say "Mercury" to me. The only other thing that I might have done differently would have been to add a pair of small foglights to the front roll pan. It looks just a little too tall for me. Oh well, off to the next build...
Peter Lombardo Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 Raul, very nice job on the Merc. I really like to see the updated components added to the older car. In real life that works great. You get the ride, comfort and performance of a modern auto, with the classic looks and attitude of the older car. Nice color combo too. The purple works really well with the dove gray gut. I like the single color on the exterior...classy.
bobss396 Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 Nice job on using the 'Stang parts, keeping it all Ford was the way to go. I'm toying with putting an AMT '66 T-Bird interior in mine. Anyway, nice neat job and I dig the purple paint. Bob
Randy Kern Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 Raul, once again all the mods come together on this for a clean look that works. Very smooth! The possibilities with this kit are endless, and yours came out very cool.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 The only word that comes to mind is: GORGEOUS!!! Congrats on yet another great addition to your collection!
ajulia Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 Hello there friend! Just wanted to say "Muy Fuerte amigo' Awesome implementing! Keep on wit the keepin on! Peace Ajulia
Billy Kingsley Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 That's pretty darn cool, Raul! Great concept and great execution.
RatRod Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 Man, that is awesome Paul!!! The detail work is fabulous!!! I love the interior work, and you do great under hood detail that is top notch!!!
bsoder Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 Way cool Raul!...great idea using the 'Stang interior...thinkin' outside the box!
djway3474 Posted December 21, 2007 Posted December 21, 2007 You suggested to try the interior swap so I did. Actually I first constructed that interior about 8 years ago and the car still is not done but it is getting close. It is a 58 Impala, purist please dont freak LOL. Your Merc is fantastic. Dwayne

Dwayne That's too funny, Dwayne!! I'm also building a mild custom '58 Impala and I'm struggling with ideas for the interior, mostly the seats. I don't want a bench seat in the front, I don't like the "custom" front seats that came in the kit and none of the bucket seats that I have look good with the existing rear seat. Maybe I'm a "purist" as well because I was thinking of using the interior bits from a Camero kit...but it looks like the Mustang interior fit pretty well. Thanks for the compliments and the ideas!!
MoparMarc Posted December 22, 2007 Posted December 22, 2007 Great build, love the idea of mixing the Merc with the Mustang.
