Rob Hall Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 (edited) I like the Grand Cherokee, I may get a new one to replace my old one if I move back to a colder climate..but if I end up moving to a beach area, I may get a Wrangler. The new Cherokee is very strange looking from the front, not sure what to think of the Renegade, not really into the the little CUV 'cute utes'. Edited March 20, 2014 by Rob Hall
Jon Cole Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 (edited) When I look at the new Cherokee, I think it looks like a design study for a new Grand Cherokee. As in "Same old vehicle with new nose and tail" Essentially, a GC with a rounded front and squinty headlights. What is the big difference between the two besides appearance? I'm just trying to figure out what justifies building the Cherokee, when they already have the GC. At least on the previous generation Cherokee, I knew the front end had the solid axle. Ditto on the new one? Edited March 20, 2014 by Jon Cole

Ditto on the new one? The Cherokee is considerably smaller, FWD/AWD with a 4 cyl. It's the Liberty replacement. The GC is RWD/AWD and is larger, w/ V6 and V8. Big price difference also. There has been talk for years also of a larger Grand Wagoneer model, kind of a Jeep version of the Durango (the curent Durango is a LWB Grand Cherokee under the skin). Feel the same way about the the smaller SUV's, I see them as this generation's station wagons.

JM485 Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 (edited) I would not buy a Toyota FJ because it has independent front suspension. Very limited travel and lots of joints to go bad. While Fiat may not be the best choice of owners for Chrysler and Chrysler may not be the best choice of owners of Jeep, at least the Wrangler is still a true off-road vehicle that has live axles at both ends and a 2 speed transfer case. It can also be owned with a manual tranny if so desired. I'd prefer a Land Rover Defender but the price on the few used ones around is quite prohibitive. As far as the Jeep Renegade goes, let's all hope it is a dismal failure. The world does not need another SUV that is really a cheap station wagon and not a utility vehicle in any sense. I wouldn't worry too much about the IFS, it does a lot of things better than two straight axels can. Plus they have had since 86 to perfect it! To be fair, I do own an 86 pickup so I'm just a little bit bias. Edited March 21, 2014 by JM485
