I'm building a 1970 Chevelle with steelies and I cant decide what color to paint them, the car will be testors one coat lacquer revving red and I think since I don't have any dog dish hubcaps painting the wheels body color might just be too much. What's your opinion?

Get some dog dishes and go with the red wheels. That's what I would do.

where can I find a set like what would come on a base model Chevelle Malibu?

All of the above suggestions will work. My preference would be gloss black with silver lugs and maybe center cap, or , if you can find the right dog dish go with the body color.

Definitely body color on the wheels if you're going for a factory stock look, otherwise you can do whatever color you want (which is the case anyway since it's your car). B)

Jason, as far as I can remember only the Mopars did dog dish with steel rims in body color. The Chebbies and others all had black rims. Most of the units from GM in the era of your model had some kind of Rallye Wheel application. Dog dish nowadays, we called them nut caps back then. Remember this way, GM was black under the hood, and on the wheels. Mopar was body color everywhere.

I had built the COPO Nova a while ago so after digging through the parts box I found the dog dishes. Even though it wouldn't necessarily be correct I painted the wheels body color and I think it looks pretty good,

That's not really correct, GM passenger cars had body color wheels back then, especially with the smaller hub cap. Also, Mopars weren't necessarily "all body color" either. I know of several 1 owner late '60s/early '70s Mopars with black wheels, rather than body color.

Jason, if you're going for the 'bone stock' look you're good, if not , I would do some white letters on those slicks, OR , use some chrome trim rings with those dog caps, like these:

I'm going for not a total sleeper but kind of a daily driver that the guy races on Friday nights, so I'm going for a stockish look that is actually a pretty fast car. I actually have some chrome trim rings that I test fitted and I love the look but if I'm going to use them on the fronts I'll have to do some cutting to get a pair I have to fit well. I'lltry it out and see if I like the look.

Found some clear in the stash so got the body and hood cleared, right now (after the picture) the body is drying after another coat of clear while the hood I'm buffing out, I might have to post a short wip over on the workbench but I'm happy with the paint this far

It could be that several Mopars had black wheels. I know personally that my Dad bought extra wheels for the family grocery getter to have snow tires mounted. They were black. The car was blue. This was in 1965. Mopars have been notorious for all body color, wheels, under the hood and under the trunk and underneath as well. It's just that I don't remember seeing any GM steel wheels at all actually that were body color, unless white or black. Definitely a Mopar phenomena. Most GM cars had wheel coverings, or in the muscle car era, rallye wheels. Bare wheels/nut caps is more of a Mopar style in the era of the 60's and early 70's. This is of course a basic observation. I would not by any means swear by anything that Mopar did back then, they were always good for a quick change.

Just general information, nothing else intended.

Thanks for all the information, I decided against the steel wheels so they're in the purple pond. I chose a set if torque thrusts that I think look a lot better!

The color is testors one coat lacquer revving red with a few coats of wet look clear polished. I'm a lot happier with the wheel choice as well. Edited by Dragfreak
