youpey Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 i have used humbrol paint a lot in the past, but i recently got humbrol green paint. the paint is so thick and hard to paint, it reminds me of the testors little bottles. was there a change in formula for these paints or did i get a bad bottle
DrGlueblob Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Hmmm.. I was just using a tinlet of Humbrol gloss black and it seemed runnier than my other Humbrol tins. I have a battery powered stirrer and it gets used on all my paint jars/tins/bottles. Sometimes that's all it takes to get the thicker mixtures workable.
Monty Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 (edited) I'm not aware of any recent formula change, but I do know that Humbrol paints need to be stirred occasionally. This is what you need: https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRbUP4kvR-2t5H-n7HpyX5RTtlZsKxEDizb6czNz7SmYp8S25VcHQ This one's only about $12.00 at your local hobby shop and it's leagues better than the cheap one Micro-Mark sells. IMNSHO, anyone who uses jar/tin/bottle paints should have this tool. Edited April 9, 2014 by Monty
DrGlueblob Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Yep, I have that one. You can also find some drink stirrers on Amazon that are basically the same tool.

If you've used the tool and it didn't help, you must've gotten one of the rare (in my experience anyway) bad ones. If there's a HobbyTown near you, you should be able to get another tin for under $2.00.
youpey Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 i added some thinner to the paint and i probably added too much because now it is a little streaky. i think i will need to just do super thin coats to build up the color since i over thinned
bobthehobbyguy Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I take it you added the thinner to the tin. Its better to only thin what you are going to use. It is my understanding that thinned paint has a shorter shelf life than unthinned.
10thumbs Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I recently opened up old Humbrol paint tins I found in my cellar. I'm talking vintage 1975. They're still good! I did add some thinner though to some of them. The gloss paints are in excellent condition. The flats are pretty dried out, no sense in using them. The hit is, there's a red gloss that is the most beautiful red I've seen in a while, and in excellent condition. I'm spraying it soon! Michael

10thumbs Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Hi Monty. Sorry for the delay in replying. I've posted the color here recently, let me do a looky. Soon. Michael
10thumbs Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Monty, it's #19, Humbro Gloss. It's killer in my book! I have a 64 Plymouth Belvedere, or a 64 Resin Savoy that just cries for this red. Michael
